The main lure of Galician food is its variety, reaching perfection with the simplest and most naturally combined ingredients. Lacón con grelos (ham with turnips) is one of the most representative dishes in winter months or potatoes and chorizo (pork sausage) are added to the ham stew and whole turnips. Another hearty dish is cocido gallego (Galician stew), consisting of ham, beef and chicken, chorizo, and turnips or cabbage, potatoes and chick peas.

Empanadas (meat or fish pies) are made from a soft, light and high quality pastry, with saffron, oil, pepper and lots of onion mixed in with the cold meat.

The range of fish in Galicia is extensive to say the least, with the tastiest being those caught in the rías or just off the coast: including hake, turbot, sea-bass, grouper and sole. They are served in classic ways: a la plancha (grilled), a la gallega (Galician style) or in a caldeirada (fish stew).

Deserts here include fresh local cheeses, superbly prepared cakes and pastries and filloas (a type of crepe).
