roast suckling pigCastilla y Leon is famous for its suckling pig and suckling lamb. In Valladolid the suckling lamb is the most popular and there are restaurants where you go exclusively to eat lamb. Valladolid has been getting the tapas culture in recent years and there is a tapas competition between Valladolid bars that is held once a year.

Castilla y Leon is famous for its wines with three different wine areas in Valladolid: Ribera del Duero, Cigales and Rueda. Ribera del Duero is one of the best wine areas in Spain and the world. Vega Sicila vineyard, located in Valbuena de Duero (25 km from Valladolid), can be considered as one of the best wines in the world and one of the most expensive. The wines produced are mainly red wine of Tempranillo type. Cigales has specially remarkable pink wines and Rueda has good white wines.

La Corte is in the centre of Valladolid and is one of the best places to sample old traditional Castilian cooking of Old Castile. The building is modern although the interior is decorated with wooden beamed ceilings and plaster white walls. Some of the best dishes are baked rape or monkfish served with pine nuts, fresh mussels, and prawns, Bacalao (cod) prepared with virgin olive oil and garlic and served with a freshly made mushroom sauce or roasted oxtail with fried potatoes and sweet peppers. Dessert could include a cheese tart of a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate truffle. At the downstairs tavern you can try some of the house Castilian wine with very fresh tapas.

The word for grill in Spanish is parrilla, and this restaurant serves some of the finest grilled fish and meat dishes in town. The site was once a monastery in 1596 that has undergone many changes over the centuries before being converted into this successful restaurant with an elegant medieval setting of gilded mirrors, wrought iron, stained-glass windows depicting biblical themes and stone arches. Specialities include ensalada de rape or monkfish salad with little red pimientos. Duck pâté is a great starter and milk-fed lamb cooked to tender perfection in a wood oven is a real gourmet delight. The bonito tuna is among the best fish offerings and is marinated in sea salt before being lightly sautéed in virgin olive oil.

Set near the water, tourist office and the Casa de Cervantes this 1960s establishment serves very fresh fish including a succulent brochette of sole and hake with fresh asparagus. Cocido Castellano famous regional stew, roast lamb and suckling pig are also available, plus a selection of well-chosen wines.

This is one of the finest restaurants in the city being very unpretentious and offering delectable cuisine. Two favourites are sole with pine nuts and seasonal river crabs with many other fish dishes available, including hake and monkfish. Roast suckling pig and roast lamb are also popular. Other specialties include peppers stuffed with crabmeat; tender veal scaloppine "Don Quixote," served with a piquant sauce; and arroz con liebre (herb-laden rice studded with chunks of roasted wild rabbit, in season). The restaurant is next to the Casa de Cervantes south of the cathedral.
