Valencia Restaurants
The
use of rice in Valencian cuisine has produced an endless variety
of different combinations including: Arros Negre with squid in inky
sauce; Paella de Verduras (with vegetables) and Arros amb Fesols
i Naps (with white beans, pork, lard, "garreta", black
pudding and turnips).
Valencia is known for its excellent fruit where the orange takes first place, so not surprisingly they offer a wide range of desserts or sweet dishes, and refreshments especially horchata which is a cold drink made with chufa, rush or tiger nuts, drunk with fartons.
Valencia wines are of excellent quality, with whites from the Upper Turia and the Serrania or reds from Requena, Utiel and Campo de Liria.
Restaurants in Valencia
La
Pepica
Avenida Neptuno 6, 46011 Valencia
Tel: +34 96 371 0366
www.lapepica.com
This was Ernest Hemingway’s favourite restaurant, and little has changed since he ate there. It is a large open-air place where everything was cooked in sight and you can pick out what you want to have grilled or broiled: and the seafood and the Valencian rice dishes are the best on the beach.
La Rosa
Avenida Neptuno 70, Valencia
Tel: +34 96 371 2076
La Rosa is very popular with the locals and offers a vast menu and
a good wine list. One recommendation is fried pork skins called
chicharrones which arrives steaming in a big, concave pan: a version
with rabbit and chicken has green beans and snails added to the
mix.
Raco
del Turia
10 Carrier Ciscar, Valencia
Tel; +34 96 395 1525
The restaurant has a medium sized dining room with wood beams, white
moulding and brass chandeliers. The food here is seriously traditional
with grilled zucchini (courgettes), asparagus, tomatoes, eggplant, onions and
mushrooms dressed with delicious romesco sauce of almonds, peppers,
onions, tomato, garlic and olive oil, or plump fresh shrimp arrive
piping hot drizzled with garlic and oil.
Tasca Josue
19 Carrier Calixto III, Valencia
Tel: +34 96 384 1873
Recommendations here include an appetizer of a bright-tasting salad
of thinly sliced octopus, zucchini, red onion and tomato, or a "shooter"
with puréed red pepper and garlic and shrimp on the side.
Sea bass is served with sautéed mushrooms and pine nuts or
a filet mignon arrives with haystack potatoes and delicious shreds
of Spanish ham. Melon soup with yogurt sorbet is a perfect way to
end the fairly light meal, or you can have a brownie smothered in
chocolate ice cream, white chocolate sauce and passion fruit
L'Ambigù
Carrier Felip Maria Garin, Valencia
Tel: +34 96 337 4005
This restaurant attracts a young crowd and canned contemporary pop
alternates with live classical music played by a string quartet.
The menu is eclectic and changes often. The raspberry vinegar anchovy
soup sounds horrible but tastes amazing. Or you can sample the real
Valencian rice dishes with four versions: squid; octopus and asparagus;
chicken and rabbit; and cauliflower and cod.
