Valencia Local Attractions
When
you start
to explore historic Valencia it is best to start in the old part
with the octagonal Micalet bell-tower which is the landmark of the
city. From there you have a great view over all Valencia where Victor
Hugo counted more than 300 more bell-towers. In the Capitulary you
can see the Holy Chalice, from which Jesus Christ and the Apostles
are said to have drunk from during the Last Supper. In the Cathedral
Museum are works by Goya,
Jacomart, Cellini, and Paggibonsi as well as paintings from the
Valencian school from the 15th to the 17th century.
Close to the Catedral de Santa Maria de Valencia there is the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, and the Almudin medieval granary that is nowadays used as a museum. In the nearby church Iglesia de San Esteban the daughters of the legendary El Cid are rumoured to have been married.
The old river-bed of the Turia is used by the Valencians for all
kinds of sports and leisure activities. Take a look at the three
old bridges, Puente del Real, Puente de la Trinidad and Puente
de Serranos (with the Torres de Serranos) 15th century towers which
were part of the old town walls and combine the elegance of a triumphal
arch with the solidness needed for fortifications. The IVAM (Instituto
Valenciano de Arte Moderno) is situated here and is one of the
leading museums of modern arts in Spain.
