Train System in Spain
Spain is a diverse and fantastic country with buzzing cities and huge unspoilt rural areas. Its a fabulous country to drive through and you can tour on some of the roads and not see another car for quite a while. Driving through Spain is great fun, and we are really appreciating what a great country we live in and trying to see more and more of it by car.
There is a lot of new development taking place on the Spanish rail system with the new Maria Zambrano Station open in Malaga and new AVE high speed links to Madrid and Antequera.
Spanish Trains Website
The Main train company in Spain is Renfe.
When you go to this website you have the option to change to English on the bottom left hand side ("idioma"). It will say Origin & Destination and ask you for date of travel. These are for the MAIN STATIONS.
When you click on this option you can find out timetables and fares from the main Spanish stations. Some of the routes and timetables give you the option to purchase tickets straight off the page, but some don't and If you want to purchase tickets then you have to go back to the home page to the "Compra de Billettes" section, but the bad news is that you have to make the purchase in Spanish.
On the Spanish version you will also notice a box for Cercanias which are the local train services which operate from Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cadiz, Madrid, Malaga, Murcia/Alicante, Santander, San Sebastian, Seville and Valencia. You can find out timetables by clicking on the relevant area in this drop down box.
When you put the website into English you don't get the option for these Cercanias Lines but the Spanish option is pretty straightforward.
We hope this helps and if you have had any experiences good or bad with the train system you can email us on gary@spanish-airport-guide.com
