If you are unsure whether you need a hire car where you are staying, then typically apartments are near to in built-up areas full of shops, bars and restaurants but villas tend to be in more outlying and remote areas.  Although most accommodation will have some facilities nearby, you lose a lot of flexibility and are restricting your choices dramatically without your own transport – especially if you want to explore the area or are a bit of a distance from the beaches.

If you do decide to hire a car then most insurance policies have an excess which means you pay an amount (say €500) if you have an accident and they cover the rest. Be aware of how much the excess is because it can be very high and you might prefer to pay a bit extra so that you are not liable for anything:  especially as you are driving in a foreign country with unfamiliar roads and signage where you may not always be fully aware of the rules and regulations.
