Reus Area Guide
Reus
is the major commercial and cultural centre of south eastern Catalonia.
It is 100km from Barcelona and about 7.5km from the city of Tarragona
which is also the province in which it is situated. The nearby costal
town of Salou is
just 12km away. It is well worth hiring a car if you are visiting
this area as it is by far the best way of getting around. There
are several car
hire firms at Reus
Airport who can arrange to have a rent a car waiting for you
on arrival.
During the eighteenth century Reus was the international point of reference for the brandy trade, and it was during the nineteenth century industrial revolution that the city underwent a boom fueled by the textile industry and it was redesigned in modernism which was the most avant-garde style.
Although Reus is the home town of Antoni Gaudí it boasts no examples of his work and the finest Modernist creations are by Lluís Domènech i Montaner which include the Pere Mata Institute, the Casa Navàs, the Casa Rull and the Casa Gasull.
The Reus Tourist Office offers scheduled excursions to buildings which are generally closed to the public plus free entrance to the Salvador Vilaseca Museum and the Art and History Museum. For more information and advance booking, contact the Oficina De Turisme De Reus (Tel: +34 977 778 149) www.turisme.reus.net
