Palma Beaches
The
Island of Mallorca has more than seventy beaches ranging from large
bays packed with tourist facilities to tiny rocky coves which are
only accessible by foot or from the sea. The main tourist beaches
offer every kind of water sport imaginable including beach volleyball,
windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing. When you are exploring the
coast be sure to hire
a car so that you can stop off at some of the harbours and be
seriously impressed at the multi-million pound yachts moored in
some of them.
Listed below is some information on some of the beaches that are well worth visiting.
Beaches in Palma
Puerto
de Andratx is still fairly exclusive and close the
beaches of Camp de Mar and San
Telm, which is sheltered by Dragonera Island.
Portals Nous is a small beach which is mostly used by the yachtsmen and their guests from Puerto Portals Yacht Club. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops in the area.
Palma Nova and Illetes are between 10 and 16km to the southwest of Palma are smaller but popular beaches. Palma Nova has a long beach with fine white sand and turquoise water while Illetes has two coves which are 75 and 150 metres wide with pine trees stretching to the shore. On the road to Palma Nova is Marineland where you can see dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows as well as Polynesian pearl diving demonstrations.
Magalluf
is about 900 metres long and a very popular beach with the tourists.
Banana-riding is just one of the activities on offer and there is
also plenty of nightlife here.
Peguera has three beaches and is a beautiful, quiet spot with fine sand surrounded by pine trees and is one of the older and well known beach resorts on the south west of Mallorca.
Cala Fornells is a small beach (100 metres long and just 6 metres wide) with fine sand near Peguera. As there are a number of hotels nearby and many summer houses in the area, this beach is best visited during the low season.
Cala Mayor is where some serious water sports are held.
Camp de Mar is a small beach situated between Peguera and Andratx in an area which is undergoing development with a golf course under construction and many new houses being built.
Playa Mago was the first nudist beach
on Mallorca. It is 4km south from Magaluf and has clear waters and
a restaurant where you can sit and enjoy the shade. The beach is
very small and parking is limited, so you really need to get there
before 11:00 in the high season if you want to leave your car anywhere
nearby,
Pere Antoni is within walking distance from the centre of Palma. At the end of the beach towards Portixol there is parking available in the beach area or marina.
Ciudad Jardin is 5km east of Palma between Es Molinar and Cala Gamba. It is a very attractive large beach surrounded by suburban housing.
Playa de Palma is popular for cycling and walking with a long esplanade full of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.
Beach Arenal is 11km to the south east of Palma and is the place to go if you like late nights and a good selection of bars and entertainment. During the summer months the beaches are very lively with both tourists and locals.
Es
Trenc is the most popular beach on Mallorca, located
on the southeast coast between Cap de Salinas and Cap Blanc. It
can be easily reached by car or bus from the Plaza Espanya in Palma
with departures three times a day. It is a 3.5 km conserved stretch
of shoreline with soft white sand and shallow clean blue water.
If you are using a hire car it has a car park, as well as a number
of restaurants and bars. As well as being popular with tourists
it also is wel visited by yachts.
Can Picafort beach is very popular during the summer months where you can expect sun every day.
Cala Mesquida is one of the best beaches on Mallorca with sand dunes stretching in land. If you are looking for a quiet place with a large beach, clear water and a quality hotel with excellent facilities nearby, then this is ideal for you.
Getting around in Pâlma
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at Palma Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
