Late autumn is an ideal time to fly into the Spanish capital of Madrid as you can be fairly confident of exploring the beautiful city in warm, tolerable temperatures under clear blue skies. Airfares and hotel rates are also lower at this time.

The main airlines flying from the UK into Madrid Barajas Airport are British Airways and Iberia which operate frequent flights from London Heathrow. Other airlines include Easyjet and Ryanair from Liverpool and London Gatwick, Easyjet from Bristol, Edinburgh and Luton and Ryanair from Stansted.

Madrid Airport has its own Metro station and the journey into town requires at least one change, or you can get a bus into the city centre or a taxi which will set you back around €30-35, including the airport surcharge (rates increase between 22:00 and 06:00).

If you are yearning to visit a music festival with all the clout of the big UK heavyweights like Leeds and Reading but don’t want the risk of having to dance in torrential rain or traipse through sodden fields, then Benicàssim may have the answer. Located 92.2 km south of Valencia Airport, Benicàssim is a beautiful port town and beach resort on the east coast of Spain which each year hosts the Benicàssim International Music Festival. Past acts have included Radiohead, Blur, The Chemical Brothers and Depeche Mode.

Originally launched in 1995, the Benicàssim festival will this year run for four days from the 16th to the 19th July and boasts yet another phenomenal line-up. Headlining are Oasis, Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers, who are supported by a wealth of incredible talent including Paul Weller, Lily Allen, Mystery Jets, 2 Many DJs and the White Lies. Aside from the music acts there are a plethora of other activities to keep visitors entertained both around the venue and on the streets of Benicàssim itself. These range from art installations to short films and fashion shows, as well as examples of Spanish dance forms both traditional and contemporary.

One of the big pluses of this festival is that it offers revellers the opportunity to stretch the experience out into a full blown holiday, as the 4 day weekend camping tickets actually provide for 9 days of camping all for the ticket price of £160 (day tickets are £ 67.50). This really gives people a chance to explore the region to its’ fullest and make the most of the Spanish weather and nearby beaches while here. There are several ways of getting to Benicàssim, although flying into Valencia Airport is the most popular means. Flights to Valencia are available from 12 UK airports including Bournemouth, Bristol, Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle.

For those arranging a Valencia Airport car hire then it is a fairly straightforward 55 minute drive north along the coast to the event ground. Alternatively you could pay 25€ and join the festival’s FIBERClub, which, along with other exclusive advantages, entitles members to use the festival bus service. These shuttle buses run from the airport to the festival ground every hour Monday to Friday between 10am and 10pm and on the Monday and Tuesday after the festival between 7am and 5pm.

If you have not signed up to become a member then there are three other main alternatives. A Valencia Airport private transfer can be pre-booked and means you will be met in arrivals by a driver and whisked off straight to the event, while cheaper options come in the form of the buses and trains. Fortunately there is a train station right in Benicàssim which has direct connections from most of the major cities such as Valencia, Barcelona, Alicante, Gerona and Madrid. Although these RENFE trains do not run direct from Valencia airport there is a metro train which transfers passengers to the main Valencia train station in just a few minutes and then it is approximately an hour on to Benicàssim. Click here to find RENFE train times.

Unlike the trains, buses from the major cities do not go direct to Benicàssim but instead stop at Castellón Bus Station. From here buses run roughly every 15 minutes to Benicàssim between 6.15am and 10.30pm. Click here to find bus times and fares from the major cities. The exception to the bus and train rules tends to be Reus Airport, which is the second closest airport to the festival at a distance of 167.5km. Ryanair offers flights to Reus from 17 different places in the UK including Durham, Inverness and Liverpool but both train and bus routes from Reus go to Tarragona first before go onto Benicàssim (or Tarragona, Castellón then Benicàssim in the case of the buses). For Reus to Tarragona bus times click here. Driving to the festival in a Reus Airport car hire would take around 1hr and 40 minutes.

Other then Reus and Valencia, the nearest airports are Barcelona Airport, Alicante Airport, Girona Airport and Madrid Airport. Train and drive times between Benicàssim and each of these airports is roughly the same, give or take 20 minutes. The travel time from Barcelona is around 2½ hours, from Alicante 2hr 50mins, from Gerona 3hr 30mins and from Madrid 4hr and 40mins.

An altogether longer option for those not wanting to fly but travelling from the UK is to go by coach, a journey of around 31 hours if departing from London. Tickets are available though National Express and Eurolines.

To book tickets visit the official Benicàssim International Festival click here.

    Hi Gary

I am trying to find information reference: I am travelling up from Alicante to Valencia rail station and I need to get to the airport for my 1230 hrs flight. I can get a train arriving at 0930 hrs, I believe that there is a tram that could take me to the airport direct for me to book in at 1030 hrs. Is this correct please as I can not find on the web the times of the trams as I believe that this is a relatively new tram. Or would it have to be buses or taxi?

    Many thanks

Thanks for your help yes Its not worth extra travel for saving 10 – 15euro Thanks

Gemma xx

Hi Gemma,

It’s just over 60 km from Murcia Airport to Mazarron so a taxi which will carry up to 4 people will cost in the region €85-90 single fare. There are no bus links from Murcia but you can catch a bus from Cartagena to Mazarron but the last one leaves at 19.30 so you won’t be able to make it – but it may be of use for your return journey.

The only other sightly cheaper option I can see is if you can get a train from the Renfe station in the centre of Murcia to Cartagena which will cost about €15 and then a taxi from Cartagena to Mazarron which is a 34km and will cost about €50.

You can find out how to get from Murcia Airport to the railway station in the city centre by clicking on this link.

Because of your ETA I would be tempted to get a taxi straight from the airport to Mazarron – by the time you have added all the costs of taxis, trains and buses together there is really not a lot of difference in price and it will save you hours in travelling.

Linda

    Hi,

I was wondering if you could help i’m arriving at Murcia airport today at 19.05 need to get to Mazzeron but I didnt realise how expensive it was for a transfer, could you possibly tell me how I could get there by bus or train?

    Thanks very much

Hi Marianne,

You can catch a train to Burgos from both Bilbao and Valladolid Airports. If you click on this link it will take you through to the Renfe website where you can check timetables.

As far as buses are concerned you can find out details of buses from Santander Airport to Burgos here: buses from Bilbao here and finally buses from Valladolid Airport

Linda

Hi – I am planning to continue on the Camino to Santiago from Burgos. I am flying from London and can arrive at three airports – Bilbao, Valladolid or Santander (in order of preference). I would like to know the times of buses or trains that will take me from one of these airports to Burgos. Even some website addresses would help.

Kind regards

Marianne

Hi again Elaine,

There are very limited bus services from Murcia Airport. You can get a taxi into Murcia (which is quite a journey) when you land and stay there for the night. Then you can either get a train from the Renfe station in the centre of Murcia to Alicante the morning or a bus from Murcia to Alicante (which you can travel on overnight) and then it’s a taxi to Ibi as I cannot find any bus or train conections.

If you do decide to stay overnight and travel the following day you can find a selection of pensions/hotels in Murcia here.

Personally by the time you have paid for a taxi into Murcia, bus and train fares and maybe an overnght stay I would opt to get a taxi from the airport straight to Ibi.

Linda

HI Thanks very much for your reply. Do you think it would be better if we stayed in a bed and breakfast on arrival and get a bus or train the next morning. If so do you recomend anywhere near the airport. Thanks for all your help, Elaine

    Hi Elaine.

Ibi is over 130km and about a 90 minute drive from Murcia Airport (Alicante Airport is the nearest at 45km away). I’m afraid at 11.00 at night there are no buses or trains so you will need to get a taxi which will cost around €160 single fare for both of you.

Your other option is to hire a car from Murcia Airport and you can get a free online quote by clicking on the link.

    Linda

        Hello Gary,

        Hope you can help me
My mum and I are flying into Murcia airport on 29th Aug at 11pm. We are going to a wedding in Ibi on the sat and need to get from the airport to=2 0Ibi. Could you please advise me if there are any trains or buses that would take me to or near Ibi. Any help or advice you have would be greatly appreciated, thanks Elaine
