Martin Sheen flies into Santiago Airport

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

If you about to fly into Santiago de la Compostela Airport in northern Spain keep an eye out for the actor Martin Sheen who is in Galicia with his son, the actor Emilio Estevez, checking out locations for their new film “the Way” about the pilgrims’ route Camino de Santiago

Martin Sheen celebrated his 69th birthday in Galicia this Monday, and he feels a great affection for the area as his father was from Salceda de Caselas in Pontevedra.

He and his son will be back in Galicia in October to film scenes for the film in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral where he attended a pilgrimage mass on Monday.

Have you booked a flight to the right Palma and Santiago?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

These are two Spanish holiday destinations that often get mixed up.  There are a great many places that sound the same and often land holidaymakers on the wrong side of the world – for a start there are at least ten Santiagos.

You only have to look at an atlas to see how many places in the world share the same name and the airport codes can also be confusing. If you are booking a holiday online the operator should be clear about what they have sold to you, but it is your responsibility to review and approve the reservation.

If you are booking a flight to Palma Airport in Mallorca (airport code PMI) do not confuse it with  La Palma Airport in the Canary Islands (airport code LPA) – and there is a  Parma in Italy too.

Santiago in Chile is often mistaken for Santiago de la Compostela in Spain – and there are at least 10 other places around the world called Santiago.

So make sure you check every detail before you confirm and pay for your flight.

Steady reduction in routes to Valencia Airport

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Valencia is Spain’s third largest city and until early 2004 the only UK airports with non-stop scheduled flights to Valencia Airport were London Heathrow and London Gatwick. Normally the first non-London airport to be able to support non-stop flights to an international destination is Manchester, followed by Birmingham, but the first non-London airport to offer scheduled flights to Valencia was Coventry (when Thomsonfly began flights from its new base there at the end of March 2004), followed by Bristol.

The surge in demand for flights to Valencia Airport in 2004 coincided with increased awareness of the City of the Arts and Sciences complex designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. In 2007 the America’s Cup was based in the old port (as it will be again this summer) and last year saw the inaugural European Grand Prix on a street circuit laid out around the harbour area.

By the end of 2008 13 UK airports were offering flights to Valencia and in just two years traffic quadrupled from under 200,000 to almost 800,000 passengers a year. Several of the new services were short-lived and in 2008 just seven airports (instead of 11 in 2007) offered scheduled services.  Since then Clickair has abandoned its Heathrow service (which it inherited from Iberia), Jet2.com has given up its Leeds/Bradford service (it had already abandoned the Manchester and Newcastle services at the end of 2007) and Ryanair ceased its Liverpool route as part of its decommissioning of its base at Valencia Airport.

This summer there are just four airports in the UK with scheduled flights to Valencia with  easyJet flying  twice-daily from London Gatwick and daily from Bristol, while Ryanair operates twice-daily from London Stansted and four times each week from Nottingham East Midlands.

Passenger numbers from the UK declined by 12% in 2008 and the reduced capacity this summer has seen demand in the first five months ofall by almost 60%. Traffic for 2009 is likely to be around 300,000, which  is still double the number transported between Valencia and the UK in  2002.

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Hi Linda

Many thanks for your speedy reply and help – very useful information.

Marianne

Hi Marianne,

You can catch a train to Burgos from both Bilbao and Valladolid Airports. If you click on this link it will take you through to the Renfe website where you can check timetables.

As far as buses are concerned you can find out details of buses from Santander Airport to Burgos here: buses from Bilbao here and finally buses from Valladolid Airport

Linda

Hi – I am planning to continue on the Camino to Santiago from Burgos. I am flying from London and can arrive at three airports – Bilbao, Valladolid or Santander (in order of preference). I would like to know the times of buses or trains that will take me from one of these airports to Burgos. Even some website addresses would help.

Kind regards

Marianne

The best way is to get a train from the Renfe Station in the centre of Santiago de la Compostela to Ourense. If you click on the link it will give you prices and timetables.

And here are the options on how to get from Santiago airport to the bus station

Linda

I am flying to santiago de comp at 15.25 on 22/07/08 and need to travel up to Ourense. Can you suggest the best option please. I’d prefer not to rent a car.
