Many flights to Spain from Irish Airports cancelled due to industrial action

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

If you are hoping to fly to or from Spain from the Irish Airports of Dublin, Shannon or Cork today you might have to change your plans due to strike action by air traffic controllers.

The action will have quite an impact as Dublin airport is the headquarters of AerLingus and Ryanair, and Shannon is an important stopover for passengers travelling to the USA.
The dispute is about overdue pay raises and 15 controllers being suspended for refusing to adopt the new work practices.

Ryanair has been forced to axe 52  flights which will affect 6000 passengers, but they are offering travellers the opportunity to re-book their tickets or claim a full refund. The routes most affected are flights from Dublin to  Alicante Airport and Murcia Airport.

Negotiations have been taking place over the past two years for the Chinese government and a variety of Asian businesses to invest over €1 billion in the development of a tourism and leisure centre in the city of Lorca in Murcia. The Special Zone of Chinese Investments project will include 2,000 apartments, shopping and entertainment complexes, educational facilities and a theme park showcasing the Chinese cultural heritage.

There will be a commercial area where Chinese products and services will be provided, a business training school and leisure zone including a casino, restaurants, entertainment services, a five star hotel and a golf course. Around 187,000 square metres of area will be given to Chinese businesses who invest in the project.

Construction work is due to begin in 2011 and scheduled for completion in 2013/4 and with such enhancements planned for the area the Murcia San Javier Airport and new Airport at Castellon expect to experience an increase in passenger traffic.

Ryanair to cut routes from Shannon to Alicante, Girona, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Murcia Airports

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Ryanair has confirmed is cutting 17 routes from Shannon Airport from the end of March. Any passengers who booked flights after 28th March will be informed by the airline and refunded.

Ryanair is understood to be looking for a 50% cut in its operating costs at Shannon and will reduce the number of aircraft based at Shannon from four to one. The spare planes will be moved to other Ryanair bases in Belgium, Holland and Spain where the airport authorities have axed tourist taxes or reduced airport charges, in some cases to zero.

A Ryanair spokesman said: “These bases will enjoy increased passenger traffic, tourism revenues and thousands of new jobs, while Irish tourism and travel collapses as a result of Shannon Airport’s refusal to compete with other European airports and the Irish government’s suicidal €10 tourist tax.”

The Spanish Airports to which flights being cancelled are Alicante, Girona, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Murcia.

Ryanair will continue to operate flights from Shannon to Malaga, Palma and Tenerife.

Plane at Murcia Airport Taken Apart in Hunt for Lost Mobile

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

A Jet2 flight waiting to take off from Murcia Airport in Spain bound for Newcastle was delayed when the plane had to be partially dismantled when a mobile phone fell into an air vent.

The plane had just landed in Spain when one of the passengers dropped their phone which disappeared into the vent.  Because they had switched the mobile on airline bosses refused to allow the plane to take off until it was located.

So the passengers returning to the UK were delayed for three hours while the cockpit area and front row of seats were taken apart.

A spokesman for Jet2 pointed out that it is unsafe to fly a plane when there is a mobile telephone or similar communications device switched on and this is why they ask air passengers not to switch their phones on until they reach the airport terminal building.

Monarch is now offering on line check in  to passengers travelling on scheduled flights from some Spanish  airports.  It  is now available to  travellers with pre-allocated seats flying from Alicante, Barcelona, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Lanzarote,  Malaga, Menorca, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife.

The service is available between seven days and 4.5 hours prior to departure and is designed to help reduce time spent at the airport and ensure that seats are allocated in advance.  But be warned you have to pay to pre-book  your seats!

Passengers using online check-in and travelling with just hand luggage can go directly to the departure gate on arrival at the airport. If you have bags to go in the hold then take them to a fast bag drop desk where they will be tagged and taken to the aircraft.

Victoria Cars Announces Shortage for Car Hire at Murcia Airport

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Victoria Rent a Car has already informed their clients last month that the current vehicle fleet for car hire in Alicante Airport and Murcia Airport will be maxed rapidly during high season 2009.

Holidaymakers who are looking for last minute offers could experience a nasty surprise by waiting too long for making their reservation. Especially for popular holiday resorts as those on the Costa Blanca and Costa Del Sol.

The company’s main airport branches are Alicante, Murcia and Madrid Airport and they are expecting that cars will run out fast during the height of the summer season. In either case, they advise to book your rental car on line in advance and arrive with a confirmed booking voucher rather than waiting for a last minute deal which is something that is not going to be available this year.

Jet2 confirms Murcia as Surprise Top European Destination

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Established in February 2003 from Leeds Bradford Airport, Jet2.com has cemented itself as a significant low cost carrier with several bases in the north of the UK and a fleet of 30 aircraft. The airline’s network which this summer will consist of almost 100 routes continues to expand across several UK bases.

The leading destinations in Europe include the likes of Alicante, Farom Malaga and Palma although Jet2’s favourite destination in Spain is currently Murcia with 33 weekly flights and connections to all six of the airline’s UK bases. Murcia is located around 60 kilometres south-west of Alicante but handled just 1.9 million passengers last year compared with 9.6 million at Alicante.

Flying a dog from Murcia or Alicante

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Hi David,

You can fly the dog back without using a pet transport carrier, and Aena (the Spanish Airport Authority) have produced some guidelines regarding transporting pets. Only a few airlines provide this facility, and I know that British Airways and Monarch will transport pets on certain flights. It has to be done on an aircraft which has a special area between the hold and the passenger cabin.

As far as getting your pet on board the plane, my experience has been that you either check them in at the airline desk and someone comes and takes them to the cargo area for boarding or you are asked to take them straight to the cargo area – it depends on the airline and the airport.

Hope this helps.

Linda

dear Gary,
We have a Yorkshire terrier which we wish to transport from either Murcia or Alicante airport without having to use a pet transport carrier
and not having to leave in a holding area other than the cargo excess booking in depot. The reason for this query is our dog is very sensitive
an epileptic and when we retuned to England last time we were told that the only way to send a dog back to England was via a recognised pet
carrier
is this correct.
Yours faithfully
David

Getting from Murcia to Mazarron

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Thanks for your help yes Its not worth extra travel for saving 10 – 15euro Thanks

Gemma xx

Hi Gemma,

It’s just over 60 km from Murcia Airport to Mazarron so a taxi which will carry up to 4 people will cost in the region €85-90 single fare. There are no bus links from Murcia but you can catch a bus from Cartagena to Mazarron but the last one leaves at 19.30 so you won’t be able to make it – but it may be of use for your return journey.

The only other sightly cheaper option I can see is if you can get a train from the Renfe station in the centre of Murcia to Cartagena which will cost about €15 and then a taxi from Cartagena to Mazarron which is a 34km and will cost about €50.

You can find out how to get from Murcia Airport to the railway station in the city centre by clicking on this link.

Because of your ETA I would be tempted to get a taxi straight from the airport to Mazarron – by the time you have added all the costs of taxis, trains and buses together there is really not a lot of difference in price and it will save you hours in travelling.

Linda

Hi,

I was wondering if you could help i’m arriving at Murcia airport today at 19.05 need to get to Mazzeron but I didnt realise how expensive it was for a transfer, could you possibly tell me how I could get there by bus or train?

Thanks very much

Gemma

Getting from Murcia to Almerimar

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Hi Judith,

It’s over 250km from Murcia Airport to Almerimar so you’re talking around €300 single fare for a taxi! And I’m afraid there are no buses or trains from Murcia to Almeria or Almerimar so your cheapest option would be to hire a car from Murcia Airport.

Linda

Hi there,
I was wondering what would be the cheapest option from getting from Murcia airport to almerimar, I arrive about 9pm so I’m guessing there would be no buses,
many thanks
