Menorca Restaurants

When dining in Menorcan restaurants, tavernas, cafés and bars the food is quite delicious as it is usually based on a combination of fresh produce and home cooking.

Menorca is ideally placed for the freshest seafood and fish with top quality Spanish fruit and vegetables also readily available. Menorca is particularly well-known for its dish 'caldereta de llagosta', which is a delicious lobster stew.

Many restaurants are helpful in translating the menu. However it is useful to know that most restaurants provide an economical set meal at midday - known as a Menú del Día - a similar alternative - Menú del Noche - often appearing in the evenings. If you want to see the full menu then you should ask for “La Carta”. Unless you are a wine connoisseur the vino de casa is usually very reasonably priced and perfectly drinkable.

Probably the e finest restaurant in Mahón, La Minerva is a cosy and traditional restaurant with nautical décor on the port opposite Isla Pinto just east of the ferry terminal. It specialises in fresh seafood including clams, mussels, and lobster and an interesting variation on vichyssoise which is velvety and chilled with lobster bits. The freshly made house special is a salad of prawns, avocado, black olives, radicchio, and hearts of palm and for dessert try borrachitos al gin de Menorca, which are little cakes soaked in local gin served with strawberry coulis.

The Mediterranean seafood menu here is one of the most eclectic and interesting in the island. Start with ensalada templada con cigalitos y setas, which is a mixture of warm prawns and wild mushrooms served on a bed of lettuce, or Jàgaro's interpretation of gazpacho, flavored with shrimp and melon.

If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car . There are a number of car hire firms based at Mahon Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
