Menorca Local Attractions
Mahon
(Mao) in eastern Menorca is the capital with pedestrianised streets
full of shops, stylish designer outlets, street cafes and restaurants.
There are local markets here, historic buildings and some stunning
churches.
The Port of Mahon is a few dozen steps down the steep cliff side from Mahon centre. There is a 4km strip of marina and port area, which at one end is the working port area and the other is a millionaire's yachting playground. There are dozens of bars and restaurants, to suit every palate and pocket, and a lively nightlife with the island's only casino. You will find some great clothes and curio shops here, plus boarding points for the harbour-trip 'yellow boats'
Mesquida is a very attractive cove with safe, shallow bathing and a wide, sandy beach which is just a five-minute drive from Mahon Port. There are no facilities at the beach but the nearby village offers a small supermarket, bar and restaurant.
Es
Castell is one of the Menorca’s favourite tourist destinations
mainly due to Cala Fons harbour, which is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped
bay lined by fishing boats, cafes and restaurants. It has some lively
night life with street entertainment, market stalls and clothes
and curio shops. By day there are some fascinating walks through
the town with its twisting, narrow streets Cala Padera is a small
inlet beach of rocky bathing platforms with a sandy area which is
a five-minute walk from Cala Fons. Safe and shallow, but small and
can get crowded
Es Grau is a five minute drive from Mahon and is fabulous sandy beach forming a wide bay with very shallow water. There is a beach bar here with several restaurants within walking distance. It is ideal for young children and you can take a boat trip from here to the nearby Illa d'en Colom
Getting around in Menorca
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car . There are a number of car hire firms based at Mahon Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
We have been working in Spain for a number of years and have visited the Island of Menorca several times.
