Car Hire in Malaga
Driving in Spain is very straightforward as it has over 2,000 km of toll (peaje) roads with more planned and under construction. They are generally of an excellent standard and have service stations with cafes every 40km or so. The tolls can be expensive, especially in the high season when the rates are doubled and are calculated per km.
For long distance travelling some toll roads issue a ticket at the start and then you can pay the total when you exit. Because the locals usually avoid the toll roads because of the cost it does mean that they are usually less crowded and safer than the busy thoroughfares.
Most of the major cities of Andalucia are now linked by two lane fast motorways with toll motorways from Seville to Jerez and Cadiz: from Malaga to Marbella, Marbella to Estepona and from Estepona to Sotogrande. These roads are all of excellent quality and have low traffic density.
As you approach the peaje (toll booth) you will be see several lanes. The telepago lane is for cars fitted with a special chip on the windscreen. Use Automático when you are paying by credit card or the exact change as there is an attendant here to collect the fee. All useable lanes are indicated by a green arrow and no go lanes are marked with a red cross.
