Madrid shopsIf you are looking for designer labels or for something unique which stands out from the crowd then Madrid is the ideal place for you to shop. Here you will find exclusive designer fashion alongside large department stores and high street shops and tradition shops selling local goods.

Roman artifacts, South and Central American native jewellery and African tribal art can still be found in Madrid’s Antique shops and markets. Downtown you will be sure to find something to your liking as on the Gran Via, around Plaza Mayor and in Puerta del Sol you will find hundreds of shops to choose from.

Shopping in Madrid

high fashion in MadridConcentrated in and around the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and Gran Via are an assortment of small shops selling traditional articles including espadrilles, fabrics, ropes, hats and religious articles. Salamanca is the place to go for haute couture jewellery (especially fancy diamond rings and stunning diamond engagement rings), clothes and shoes which are sold in small exclusive boutiques with prices to match. For more affordable fashionable clothes stroll down Calle Fuencaral and through the shopping mall Mercado Fuencarral.

If you’re looking for a specific CD then you will be sure to find it in a store called Madrid Rock and if you are keen on Spanish literature then head to the city’s largest bookstore, the Casa del Libro.

The large department stores including El Corte Ingles (which has several branches in Madrid) can be found in the vicinity of the Puerta del Sol, and on the streets of Princesa, Goya and Castellana.

If you want to get all of your shopping done under one roof then one of the malls is ideal for you. La Vaguada is located in the northern part of Madrid and has over 350 stores. If you are looking for exclusive fashion garments, Galería del Prado on Plaza de la Cortes is the place to go.

Getting around in Madrid

If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at Madrid Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
