Information on Alicante
Alicante has a number of palaces worth visiting which include the Gavina Palace and Provincial Gallery with fine paintings from the 19th century. The bullring there is one of the oldest in Spain (built in 1849) and is still in use.
The old quarter of the city is a maze of small streets full of multi-coloured buildings which climb the hill. Higher up are whitewashed houses that offer spectacular views of the city and bay.
15km south of Alicante is the guitar-shaped Tabarca Island which is a 30 hectares marine reserve. It was once a refuge for Berber pirates, and in 1760 King Carlos III ordered a fortress to be built here. You can now take a short boat ride from Alicante harbour to the island.
At the harbour there is still a working fishing fleet as well as pleasure crafts, passenger vessels, nautical schools and sailing clubs. There is a wide selection of bars and restaurants where you will find some of the finest fish restaurants in the area.
One of the largest airports in Spain, Alicante Airport is perfectly placed for most of the resort towns on the Costa Blanca. You can get to many points along the coast and inland via the busy Alicante Airport bus or by catching an Alicante Airport taxi.
Many people however choose to organise their own private Alicante Airport transfer or take advantage of the cheap Alicante Airport car hire that is on offer.
