La Palma Shopping
La
Palma is an island with a long tradition of craftsmanship which
ranges from extraordinary silk fabrics, embroidery and tapestry
to woodwork, straw-weaving, wickerwork and earthenware. You can
also buy some excellent local wines, with Malvasia being one of
the most popular.
The shopping areas are mainly in Santa Cruz de La Palma and the Los Llanos de Aridane where the Plaza de España is the is the social centre of the town and focal point of the shopping area which extends in all directions around the plaza.
The
market on the island is held at Puntagorda, and is where the local
farmers and artisans can sell their products directly to the public.
The market is directly opposite the El Fayal recreation area and
is easily accessible from the main road. The market is open on:
Saturdays from 15:00 until 19:00 and Sundays from 11:00 until 15:00
Every 1st Saturday in the month there is also a second-hand goods
market.
In the market building you will find a wide variety of good quality
products for sale, including fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat,
honey, almond products, traditional cakes and biscuits, gateaux,
home-made bread, wine from the local vineyards, olives, mojos (sauces),
fresh fruit drinks, plantones, perfumes, needlework, basketwork
and local pottery,
Getting around in La Palma
If you are planning to explore the island and go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at La Palma Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
