La Palma Beaches
Much of the coast of La Palma is characterised by steep cliffs of volcanic rock and small coves which only accessible by boat. Listed below are the main beaches.
Beaches in La Palma
The capital Santa Cruz has a large beach, Playa de Bajamar, on
its south side.
The main beaches are at Los Cancajos on the east coast and Puerto Naos and Puerto de Tazacorte on the warmer western side of the island. Both have European Blue Flag awards for cleanliness and are well equipped with changing cubicles, toilets and first-aid posts. They have natural black lava sand and clear waters.
In the north La Palma near Barlovento there are a series of natural rock pools and caves which have been adapted to provide sea-water swimming pools “Piscinas La Fajana” and sunbathing areas.
Puerto
de Tazacorte has the longest beach on the west coast with a large
fishing harbour with deep sea fishing vessels and cruisers. The
restaurants on the harbour side are supplied with the fresh catch
of the day, making this a great place to sample local seafood and
watch the world go by.
Puerto
Naos is a traditional fishing village with a good beach and a local
diving base which organises viewing trips to the wealth of marine
life in this area. You will see exotic fish in the black coral reefs,
volcanic caves and underwater arches. If you take a boat excursion
from Puerto Naos or Santa Cruz you might well see some dolphins
playing in the surf, turtles and even whales.
