When driving in Spain road names that begin with an "A" are toll roads and usually relatively free from traffic. There is usually a toll-free road running more or less alongside, which will be busier and probably offer better scenic views, but the toll roads are the safest bet.

Fully-fledged expressways are few and far between with most of the country is served by "N" roads, which can vary in design and resemble expressways in all but name, while others have traffic lights with private drive ways leading straight on to them. So make sure that you plan your route carefully when driving a hire car.
