Granada Airport

in 2009 Granada Airport handled 1,187,736 passengers with 16,300 flight operations.. In Spanish the airport is known as Aeropuerto de Granada.

Granada Airport offers good access to some unknown parts of Andalucia. Apart from the City of Granada and Alhambra Palace, from here you are within easy reach of the Costa Tropical with towns such as Motril, Almunecar, Salobrena and La Herradura.

This airport also gives very easy access to Europe's southernmost ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

If you are looking for a holiday home near Granada then Medina Elvira could be the answer. Medina Elvira is set in wonderful natural surroundings in the Atarfe Region of Granada. Easily accessible by public transport. Medina Elvira is only 10 mins away from Granada's International Airport and city, 20 mins from the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort and only 50 mins away from the beaches of Motril on Spain's Costa Tropical.

There are five main Granada airport car hire companies all of them offer a good range of cars and it may well be possible to rent the car from this airport and return it to one of the others in Andalucia.

There are direct flights between Granada and the Spanish Cities of Barcelona, Girona, Madrid, Melilla and Palma de Mallorca with Iberia and Air Europa.

The Granada Airport arrivals hall is at the opposite end of the terminal building and as you go through the exit you will find the taxis and bus stop.

Arrivals are handled on the ground floor of the passenger terminal and has two doors. The general arrivals area has a capacity for up to 595 passengers with a baggage reclaim area where there are three luggage carousels, the national police, civil guard and customs. This area leads into the arrivals hall, which has a capacity of up to 399 persons and has car hire offices, cash machines, toilets and a waiting area with seats. The airport terminal building is on one level with the departures area to the right and the arrivals area to the left. In the middle are the check in desks, about 11 in total. After check in it is best to stay in the public area of the airport. You can get a coffee, sandwich or cold drink at a small coffee bar just past security. Granada have also upgraded the land-side facilities with a new and much improved catering service with a larger seating/tabled area and reasonably priced hot and cold food. You could book your own private Granada airport transfers through Spain's leading company Shuttle Direct. You will then be meet in the arrivals hall by your own driver and taken straight to your holiday destination.

Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport is located 17 kilometres from Granada and 106 kilometres from Jaén. Granada Airport Taxis are pretty cheap, the trip into the city centre costs about €25, the Alhambra €28, Albaicin €28 and it will cost you around €70 to go up into the ski resort the Sierra Nevada Mountains (plus another €10 if there is snow). You will always be able to find a taxi just outside the main arrivals hall at Granada Airport.

Your other option is to reserve a seat on a private shuttle bus from the airport to Granada and the surrounding area.

Parking at Granada Airport used to be free but like 99% of the other airports in Spain you now have to pay to park here. The car park has 450 spaces for private cars, 99 for hired cars and 4 for buses For details of current tariffs visit Granada Airport parking

If you find the cost of a private transfer a bit expensive you might like to consider booking a seat on a private shuttle bus which makes a number of stops in Granada

The are no trains at Granada Airport but you can reserve a seat on a private shuttle bus from the airport to Granada and the surrounding area.

There are also public buses into the City Centre that run at regular intervals coinciding with the flight arrivals and costing €3.00 single fare.  From Granada Airport the buses depart  at 05:20, 06:25, 07:45, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00 and from the Palacio de Congresos in Granada they leave at the same times (05:20, 06:25, 07:45, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 & 20:00). It's only a short journey (17km) which takes about 45 minutes and there are 7 stops from the Airport - Bus Station - La Caleta - Jardines del Triunfo - Gran Vía - Cathedral - Puerta Real - Palacio de Congresos.

Granada Airport have opened up a small coffee bar just past security where you can get a coffee, sandwich or cold drink. There is also a cafe in the public zone offering reasonably priced hot and cold food.

Within the departures area is a shop that sold gifts and that kind of thing but I don't remember seeing any cigarettes on sale. This may be because of the new no smoking laws in Spain.

There is no left luggage store at Granada Airport.
