Car Hire at Gran Canaria Airport
Take great care when driving in the Canary Islands and do not assume that because you are in another country you are immune from the law. For example, outside many towns are sensors which detect your speed and if you are breaking a speed limit a traffic light automatically turns red so that you must come to a stop before entering the town.
Jaywalking is illegal and is strictly enforced so stick to the crossings. Generally the traffic on the right has priority, and where a minor road intersects a major road there is normally a sign reading Stop or Ceda el Paso (give way). If there is no sign, the traffic on the major road still has priority.
Foreign drivers must pay any fines they incur on the spot unless they can present a Spanish bail bond or know a Spanish national or company who will guarantee payment. Non payment or guarantee of the fine can result in the vehicle being impounded and the driver detained. If you pay immediately you will normally receive a discount of around 20%. If you want to dispute a fine you have 15 days to register a written statement which can be produced in English.
