Family Days Out in Gibraltar

There are no large amusement or theme parks in Gibraltar, but there are some great places to take the family.

Barbary Ape Colony

Barbary ape at Upper Nature ReserveGo and visit the colony of over 200 tail less monkeys (Macaca Silvanus) that live high up on the rock in the Upper Nature Reserve. They are cute, inquisitive and nice to get your photograph taken with , but remember these are WILD animals and must be treated with respect and it is strictly forbidden to feed or touch the Barbary Apes, but they are so used to humans that they will come to you.

These Apes were brought to the Gibraltar from North Africa in the 1700 and they never left being the symbol of British sovereignty and if they go the British will leave Gibraltar. When their numbers diminished during World War II Sir Winston Churchill gave strict orders that a minimum of 24 should be maintained.

Caves and Tunnels

St Michael's CavesSt Michael's Cave was originally believed to be bottomless, which gave birth to the story that the Rock of Gibraltar was linked to the Continent of Africa by a subterranean passage over 24 km long under the Straits.

It was believed that when the Spaniards first tried to recapture Gibraltar from Britain in 1704, a party of 500 of their troops spent a night in the cave after climbing the East face of the Rock. Next morning, the alarm was given and troops of the garrison surprised and overpowered the raiding party .Many other small caves are linked to the main chamber.

Dolphin Safaris & Whale Watching

Whale and dolhin safarisThe warm waters of the Mediterranean make Gibraltar an ideal place for those wishing to indulge their fantasy of swimming alongside the dolphins. There are glass bottomed boats which take you out on dolphin safaris where you can spot the three main types of dolphins found in the Bay of Gibraltar: the common, striped and bottle nosed dolphin.

Whale watching safaris also depart from the Straits where you can expect to see pilot whales, orcas, sperm and fin whales.

Getting around in Gibraltar

If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are car hire firms based at Gibraltar Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
