Fuerteventura Beaches
If
you are planning on beach hopping in Fuerteventura it is worth hiring
a car to get around, as when it is calm in Morro Jable it can be
very choppy around the Dunes of Corralejo. The western beaches at
El Cotillo have bigger swells and are popular with surfers, although
there are some sheltered coves and lagoons to be found there too.
Following is a short summary of the beaches by area to help you
select which are the right ones for you
Beaches in Fuerteventura
The
North
In and around Corralejo there are a number of both golden and white sandy beaches where the water is usually calm and good for bathing, but this is a busy resort and these beaches can become crowded in peak season.
Just south of the resort lies the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo where enormous white sand dunes cover a large area of the north-east of the island. From beach to beach the conditions vary and sports enthusiasts use them for surfing, windsurfing and kite boarding. Naturists use the quieter parts of the beach which are about 200 metres either side of the large hotels and there are some large circular rock constructions that can give shelter or privacy. When the tide is out there are some rock pools for the children to explore. There are a few small snack bars/restaurants here where you can find some shade and a cool drink,
Around El Cotillo on the north-west coast you will find a number beaches and coves which are popular with wind and kite surfers, with some of the more sheltered lagoons suitable for bathing. The size of the beaches means that even on a busy day it is possible to have lots of space to yourself.
The
South
Between Costa Calma and Morro Jable lay the Playas de Jandia which are the longest and best beaches on the Island. These white sandy beaches have been awarded blue flags (and therefore have lifeguards), water sports activities and you can hire a boat here to go sailing. It is well worth exploring the beautiful coves that lie just outside the main resorts, and on a windy day then the beach in the old part of Morro Jable is usually a good bet, where the naturists tend to frequent the area to the left of the Lighthouse as you are looking towards the sea.
The Playa de Sotavento (Leeward beach) de Jandia is a long wide beach with a narrow band of scrubland between the beach and its surroundings. This area is popular with naturists and is cleaned daily to remove weed that washes up there.
The
West
On the windward (western) coast of the Jandia Peninsula there is a 14km stretch of unspoilt beach, but you will need a 4x4 to get to them as there is only an unsealed track to connect them with the rest of the island. While these beaches are wild and beautiful, there are strong winds and dangerous currents which make bathing inadvisable.
The Centre
The black-sand beach at Gran Tarajal has a blue flag and is popular with the locals, but the colour of the sand makes it less attractive than the beaches of Corralejo or Jandia.
Caleta De Fuste is a purpose built resort based around the large horseshoe shaped cove. The natural features of this cove mean that there is a gentle slope into the sea so it is protected from waves and dangerous currents. The beach has been created from imported sand, and bathing areas have been made around lagoons created by digging into the rock behind the shoreline and then importing sand.
Playa
Blanca is a short walk from the centre of Puerto del Rosario. It
is a white sandy beach that stretches for about a metre, and at
the far end of the beach there is a warning sign about the strength
of the currents. During the summer there is a flag system showing
when it is safe to bathe as well as lifeguards. It is used by the
locals when they fancy an hour at the beach and by surfers with
very little topless bathing and naturism is not acceptable here
A trip to the Island of Lobos gives you access to a beautiful sandy beach which has a gentle slope into the water which is great for bathing and there are plenty of fish here if you fancy trying snorkelling.
Getting around in Fuerteventura
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at Girona Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
