Fuerteventura Area Guide
Fuerteventura
sits on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico and is an all year
round holiday destination. It is one of the least spoiled of Canary
Islands with more miles of sandy beaches and sand dunes than any
of the others.
Caleta de Fuste on the coast midway up the island is very much an up-and-coming resort geared to families and an ideal base for sunbathing and exploring with a golden sandy beach set in a bay shaped like a horse shoe and gently sloping shore. South of Caleta de Fuste is the Costa Calma and the resort of Jandia or Morro Jable with superb beaches and a variety of shops and bars.
In the north of Fuerteventura is Corralejo which is a busy resort surrounded by sand dunes – which have been created by natural sandstorms sweeping vast amounts of Saharan sand over from Africa.
El Cotillo is to the west of the island and is a peaceful village with some excellent surfing beaches to the south and lovely lagoons to the north. The coast is wilder here being natural, rugged and more inaccessible. Most of the roads are dirt tracks leading to virtually deserted beaches or tiny isolated villages.
