Flying from Florida
Flying from Florida to Europe is now relatively cheap and easy, with companies like Virgin and Delta Airlines offering journeys at prices which makes long distance travel accessible to many more people than it was 10 years ago.
Because of its subtropical climate the airports in Florida handle a large number of domestic passengers from other parts of the USA. Below are indications of the flying times to other parts of the States:
| Tampa | 3 hours from New York City | 2.5 hours from Chicago |
| Fort Lauderdale | 2.5 hours from Washington DC | 3.5 hours from Boston |
| Fort Myers | 1.5 hours from Atlanta | 3 hours from New York |
| Daytona Beach | 1 hour from Atlanta | 2.5 hours from Newark |
Flying from Miami
Miami has two airports: Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Miami international is one of the busiest airports in America and is just 19km from the centre of town.
Discounted tickets to Miami actually land at the new terminal at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. You will find plenty of car hire agencies here as well as shuttle buses and taxis ready to take you into Miami. The trip to Miami Beach by bus takes about two hours or there is a shuttle bus to the Tri-Rail station at the airport. Trains run from here to the outskirts of downtown Miami hourly during rush hours, and once every two hours in the middle of the day.
Most major European airlines operate services to Miami, although there is no direct service from Australia or New Zealand and you have to change planes in Los Angeles.
Miami International Airport is well served by public buses but private shuttle vans, taxis and limousines are more convenient alternatives.
