La Coruna Beaches
La
Coruña has over 2 km of spectacular shoreline dotted with
smaller beaches and coves, complete with all the services and facilities.
They are well maintained and very clean and beaches in this area
have received a number of prestigious European Blue Flag Awards.
Trying to list all of these beaches would be impossible, but you
can find details of the main ones below.
Beaches in La Coruna
The
city of La Coruna has several beaches, the first two run below the
new city promenade and are popular and busy with easy access.
The Playa del Orzan and the Playa de Riazor
beaches face the Orzan Cove, behind the headland that separates
this area from the port and marina. Both beaches have large waves
and are ideal for surfers. They are also supervised with lifeguards.
If you head to the northwest region of the cape and you will find more lovely beaches including the Playa de las Amorosa which is equipped with showers and wheelchair ramps with a lifeguard service.
Das Lapas is overlooked by the Tower of Hercules . It has a very attractive promenade with a number of bars and restaurants.
Lazareto ó Oza is located on the outskirts of Coruña bordering with the port. It is protected by two breakwaters with access gained via a walkway.
Playa de Lino II is a small beach which is close to the city centre. It has rocks on the sandy surface and strong waves.
Do
Matadeiro lies towards the northern end of Orzan Beach
and has blue flag status. This small beach is flanked by extremely
tall stone walls and can be reached via stone steps.
San Amaro beach is close to the Tower of Hercules (on the projecting headland) in a tiny cove that is more protected than Orzan and Riazor, but is also less accessible.
Praia das Catedrais in Ribadeo is a beautiful beach with lagoons, impressive natural rock formations and caves to explore.
Getting around in La Coruna
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at La Coruna Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
