La Coruna Local Attractions
The
combination of old and new is very well illustrated in La Coruna.
On the one hand overlooking the ocean there is the world’s
oldest operational lighthouse, la
Torre de Hercules , which dates back to Roman times, which is
contrasted with the futuristic Domus building. The old fortress
of Castillo
San Anton also projects out into La Coruna’s harbour at
the end of a small stone pier, erected to guard against past invasions
and now housing a fascinating museum.
Local Attractions in La Coruna
If
you are in the old quarter make sure you visit the military museum,
Galician archive and the tomb of British hero Sir
John Moore. If you are out and about in the newer parts of town
there is plenty of shopping, a lively atmosphere, attractive buildings
and the sea.
The early medieval town is bounded by the Coruña peninsula where good examples of Romanesque architecture are preserved, and one of the most beautiful is the church of Santiago which was built in the twelfth century. It has a broad nave of pointed arches with a polychrome sculpture of the Apostle Santiago (Saint James) dating from the thirteenth century. Baroque style is present in other religious buildings, like the church of Las Capuchinas with a beautiful façade in Compostela Baroque dating back to the eighteenth century.
The Castle of San Antón is at one end of the harbour and was built at the end of the sixteenth century. It currently houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum which takes you on a fascinating journey through Galician prehistory using various pieces of metalwork, objects and tools corresponding to the hill fort culture.
