Shopping in Bilbao is a great experience as you are surrounded by some stunning architecture and lots of bars and cafes where you can stop and sample the popular local pinxtos. In the centre of Bilbao you will find some excellent antiques shops, colourful ceramics and quality leather goods and shoes. Shopping in Bilbao
Indautxu
and Ensanche are the main shopping areas in the Old
Quarter of Bilbao where you will find modern shops and traditional
establishments side by side selling a wide selection of goods. Correo,
Bidebarrieta, Askao, Artekale, Somera and La Cruz are the most popular
shopping streets and form the main part of the "Seven Streets".
You will find many kinds of specialist and traditional produce,
ranging from antique books, food, shoes, fashions and Bilbao’s
famous cakes and pastries
Streets including Rodríguez Arias, Alameda de Urquijo and
the plaza de Campuzano in
> Indautxu house a number of high street
shops and small boutiques selling exclusive jewellery, made to measure
shirts, quality clothing and hand embroidered cloth.
With its national and international fashion boutiques, antique shops and bookshops, the Ensanche area is also home to many department stores. The Gran Via is a large pedestrianised street where you will find the best shops. Other streets which are good for shopping are Ercilla (which is also a pedestrian area) and Plaza Eliptica which are good if you are looking for shoes.
If you are a reside of an EU country then you do now have to worry about declaring any purcahses you make when you head back home. Depending on what rate the euro is at it may be a great time to pick up an expensive gift. There is a great selection of jewellery shops in Bilbao and there are some stunning diamond rings and engagement rings on offer!
Getting around in Bilbao
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at Bilbao Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
