Car Hire in Bilbao
It is certainly worth renting a car from Bilbao Airport, as although it is only 12 kilometres from the city centre it offers wonderful transport communication links with northern Spain: The A-8 leads to Santander in the West and San Sebastian and the French border in the East. The AP-68 connects with Bilbao with the cities of Vitoria, Logroño, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Burgos and Madrid.
Whether driving a hire car or your own vehicle in Spain remember to carry your driving licence at all times well as a certificate of insurance and car rental/ownership ownership documents. You may be fined if you are stopped by the police and fail to present these documents (taking them into the police station the following day is not acceptable here).
The Spanish police are empowered to collect fines on the spot, and al foreigners must pay up immediately unless they can present a Spanish bail bond or address of a Spanish friend or company who will guarantee payment. If the fine cannot be paid or guaranteed the vehicle will be impounded and the driver imprisoned until the fine is paid. The good news is that if you pay your fine immediately there is normally a discount of between 20-30%. The police will issue you with a Boletin de Denuncia which details the offence and the amount of the fine. There are English instructions on the back of the document and you can write your appeal in English should you wish to dispute it.
