The roads in Spain are much better than they were just ten years ago with many of the infamously dangerous major single carriageways (such as the N340 on the Costa del Sol) being made into decent dual carriageways and some excellent toll motorways have been built.

You might still get the occasional pot-holed suspension destroyer roads but these are the exception rather than the norm on the tourist routes, and are gradually being replaced by new roads. Much of the improvement has been due to the fact that since Spain joined the EU it has benefited from funding from the other countries over the last 20 years.

To make your map reading easier, below is a classification of the various roads:

• Autopistas (motorways) have an A or E prefix to the road number: These can be toll roads (peajes). Maximum speed 120 kph (73 mph).
• Autovias are a dual carriageway which may or may not have a central reservation.  Speed limits vary from 80 to 140 kph
• Carreteras Nacional are main roads with an N or CN prefix to road number. Speed limits range from 100 to 60 kph.
• Carreteras Comercial are country roads with a C prefix. 100 to 80 kph.
• Carreteras Local are highways with speeds are as signed, but usually not more than 100 kph.
