Asturias Beaches
Asturias
has a fantastic coastline with long stretches of pristine golden
sand and many beaches which are a surfer’s paradise while
others offer a more gentle experience. The coast here is dotted
with charming and traditional fishing villages clinging to the cliffs,
with Luarca and Cudillero being two of the most well known.
The beaches below have been selected for their beauty, setting, the cleanliness of the sand and the crystal clear Atlantic waters.
Beaches in Asturias
Llanes
is a charming and atmospheric town with a central beach and a great
selection of places to eat. It is just over an hour’s drive
from Gijon and Oviedo and although there is a train service it is
quite slow and it is recommended that you hire
a car.
Playa de Rodiles is a sweep of sand over 1000 metres in length. It is located about 5km from Villaviciosa and is one of the most popular beaches in Eastern Asturias. It gets busy, but because of its size and shape not too crowded. It is backed by a pine and eucalyptus wood providing shade and picnic area. The main beach sometimes has overwhelming surf (and some very enthusiastic lifeguards). At one end of the beach there is a river inlet, and if you follow this along the sea fortification and you will find a second much calmer beach and lagoon.
Playa
de la Griega has fine sand, a river with lagoon and
the largest dinosaur footprints ever found. It is located just beyond
the little town of Colunga at the base of a steep river valley,
and is an excellent family beach with medium waves, a couple of
places to eat and drink, terrific rocks and rock pools to explore
when the tide is low and car parking. The setting is delightful
with views across to the fishing village of Lastres fishing village
with the MUJA Jurassic Museum perched on surrounding hills.
Salinas is a favourite with surfers. This beach has excellent facilities, and at the end of the promenade there is an anchor museum and a viewpoint that offers magnificent views. It shares a sand strip with the beaches of San Juan and Espartal.
Barro is a small and pretty beach which
is flanked by two islets. It has a Blue Flag award and you can enjoy
snorkelling here in crystal-clear waters. It has a car park.
Playa del Silencio is probably one of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in Asturias, located next to the town of Chestnut sellers, between Luiña and Novellana within the Protected Landscape of the Western Coast. It is bordered by scenic small barren islands of different sizes.
Getting around in Asturias
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car.
