May 04, 2005
Ryanair has formally announced Shannon Airport as its latest European base, with the location of 120 new staff and three new Boeing aircraft there.
The announcement was made by Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary in Shannon this morning, where he also unveiled details of an additional nine new UK and European routes out of Shannon. This brings the airline's total number of routes from Shannon to 14.
The new routes to the UK are Nottingham, Liverpool, Luton, and London Gatwick. The European destinations are Barcelona Airport, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Milan and Stockholm.
Mr O'Leary said the purchase of the new planes represented an investment of $240m, and already over 400,000 seats had been booked for summer services.
Pat Shanahan, Chairman of the Shannon Airport Authority, said the investment by Ryanair was unprecedented, and was a very significant development for the airport, for business industry and tourism in the West.
