Almeria Beaches
You really are spoilt for choice with the number of beaches in the Almeria area. To make life easier for you we have listed the main ones, together with brief description to help you decide if they are the right ones for you.
Beaches in Almeria
La
Garrofa is a very small beach located just outside
the town centre surrounded by cliffs with deep but calm waters,
but it can get windy which stirs things up and is not a good place
to take young children swimming. With easy access from the CN-340,
it has a small parking area and a lifeguard and beach cleaning.
When you have parked you car you have to cross the campsite at Garrofa
where there is a cafeteria and toilet facilities.
Palmeral Beach has windsurfing school just outside the town centre which is well serviced with lifeguards, red cross, showers and refreshment amenities
San Telmo in Almeria is a small beach surrounded by cliffs which you really need to drive to as if you walk it is a real hike up a pretty steep hill.This beach is never really busy because of the difficult access and lack of services, but it is a great place to drive to and take a picnic which you can eat in splendid isolation.
Las Olas Beach is near the fishing port of Almeria. It has deep but calm waters and can be accessed via the CN-340. There is a promenade here and a lifeguard, and next to the beach is the fishing quarter which is a great place to try some fish and seafood.
San
Miguel is a blue flag beach which is also known as
Zapillo or Las Conchas Beach and is in the capital of Almeria across
from the Avenida Cabo de Gata. San Miguel beach can get crowded
in the high season and offers a number of restaurants along the
wide palm shaded promenade, as well as the hire of water sports
equipment.
Nueva Almeria is a large urban beach with calm waters which is accessed via the Avenida Cabo de Gata in the centre of Almeria. This is popular beach which has a good number chiringuitos (beach restaurants) and tapas bars. It is also a good place to practice water sports.
El Bobar Beach is a 15 minute drive from Almeria close to the university. It is a long and narrow beach with the new promenade “Camino de Ribera". If you are feeling energetic there is a sports circuit here with running and cycle tracks. It is one of the quieter beaches where you can fish, with parking and calm waters which are excellent for swimming.
Costa Cabana is an urban beach with a long promenade near to the university. It has every amenity with chiringuitos and watersports.
El Toyo is a new beach close to the Olympian Town which was built for the 2005 Mediterranean Olympic Games. It is a great place for surfing as it is very exposed to the swells and west winds.
Retamar is a blue flag beach which is well equipped and can be reached via the N-344. The beach has parking, a promenade and chiringuitos which serve some excellent fish dishes. The winds and swells are moderate so it can get a bit choppy if you want to swim here.
Torregarcia
is a beautiful wide beach in the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata-Níjar.
It is surrounded by sand dunes and can suffer from strong winds
from the west. Access is via highway ALP-202, and it has parking
there but not much else so it is ideal if you want some solitude.
Los Amodeladeras is a large beach in the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata-Níjar. It has a lagoon where you will see some interesting aquatic life and is surrounded by sand dunes. It can only be accessed by foot, and can sometimes be windy with moderate swells.
San Miguel de Cabo de Gata is a blue flag an urban beach belonging to the Naturpark de Cabo de Gata-Nijar which offers excellent amenities including water sports, a sailing school and promenade with a number of places serving fresh seafood, fish and paella. It has good parking and is accessed via the highways ALP-522 and ALP-202.
Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata is a huge
unspoilt beach which is ideal if you want to spend some time in
splendid solitude, but make sure you take something to sit on and
some food and drink with you as there are no facilities here.
Getting around in Almeria
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car. There are a number of car hire firms based at Almeria Airport who will be pleased to have a vehicle awaiting your arrival. This also cuts down on transfer costs for you and your family.
