Almeria Local Attractions
The
ancient city of Almeria is sheltered at the base of a bay, dominated
by the Alcazaba Moorish citadel with three walled enclosures dating
from 995. From this citadel you get an excellent view of the impressive
Cathedral which dates from 1524 and is designed more like a fortress
than a church because to defend it from pirate attacks. It contains
numerous treasures including an eighteenth century tabernacle designed
by Ventura Rodriguez.
With its fascinating medieval architecture, the old town of Almeria is a great place to explore on foot with its squares, archways and colonnades. The city also has an archaeological museum and cave dwellings in the hillside above what was the old gypsy quarter .
If you want to find out something about the local history then
museums are a good place to start. In Almeria there is an archaeological
museum; the Capitular (Chapter House) Museum; the
Religious Sculptures Museum; the Morera Art Museum and the Villaespesa
Public Library holds part of the Almeria Museum's archaeological
archives on prehistory. The Provincial History Archive Collection

Or you might prefer the Olive Oil Museum which is located in the historical quarter in a 19th century stately home where you get the opportunity to taste a variety of different types of olive oil.
Getting around in Almeria
If you are planning to explore the area outside of the city centre and play some golf or go to some of the more out of the way beaches then you might consider hiring a car.
