Checking luggage through from NY to Venice via Madrid

Hi,

I will be flying from NY-JFK to Venice on Iberia, connecting in Madrid for
the flight to Venice.

Do I go through passport control/immigration in Madrid, and will I need to
claim my baggage and re-check it in for the flight to Venice? Or am I
considered in-transit permitting me to directly connect with my onward
flight without going through Spanish immigration/customs, with my baggage
transferred to my connecting flight to Italy?
