Distances from Reus and Girona Airports to Barcelona

Hi Carole,

There's not much to choose between them as far as ease of access is concerned, but distance wise Reus is 112km and takes about 1 hr 20 minutes to drive and Girona is 103km and takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

Linda

Hi gary
Can you let me know the distances from Reus and Gerona Airport to Barcelona City Centre?

Which is the easiest to get to Barcelona from?

Many thanks

Trains from Madrid to Lisbon

Well at least you now have the train times and know they are running!

Linda

Thank you for your response and the related link. I called the Portuguese train system but was told tickets can only be purchased in Madrid. We'll keep trying.

Best regards,

Bob Wagner, CPA

I am afraid nothing ever surprises me with the Spanish railway system as far as ticket sales are concerned! You are quite right in that you cannot obtain tickets via their website. So I went to the Portuguese site and they have timetables, etc, available and contact details. You can find all this at http://www.cp.pt/cp/displayPage.do?vgnextoid=a4f6f9e12a584010VgnVCM1000007b01a8c0RCRD

Linda

Ladies and Gentlemen:

You have been very helpful to us regarding my family's arrival at Madrid Airport. We will land on December 22 from Atlanta. May I ask you a question?

We have been trying for 6 weeks to purchase rail tickets from Madrid to Lisbon (the Lusitania) on Dec 27 for a family of 4. We have been told every week that the Spanish railway system has not yet released the train schedules and therefore we can not purchase tickets. It seems very strange to us that on Dec 15 the railway schedule has not been published for Dec 27. Can this be true? Is there some other way for us to purchase Madrid to Lisbon train tickets? Do you recommend we try to buy plane tickets instead? Thank you.

Best regards,

Driving a hire car from Portugal to Spain

Thank you for the quick response. i will look into your suggestions.
Best, Katie

Hi Katie,

I am afraid that it's only the national car companies like Avis and Hertz who have the facilities for you to hire your car in Portugal and drop it off in Spain. The other alternative is for you to get the bus from Faro to Seville and then rent a car when you get there. You can find out about bus timetables at http://www.faroairportguide.com/faro-to-seville.htm

Linda

hello-
I got your email from your terrific informative site "faro airport guide". I posted a comment on the website, but though i would email you as well. know you get this question a lot, but couldn't find the answer. do you know of a car rental company that allows pick up in portugal and drop off in spain without exorbiant fees? My husband and i are flying into lisbon and planning on renting a car in lisbon, traveling portugal's coast, meeting some friends in malaga, and then flying out of seville. and we only have one week! The whole trip will be much more complicated without a rental car! any suggestions?
Much appreciated.

Meeting point at Malaga Airport

Hi Linda
thank you very much for your kind advice - and for such a prompt response - what excellent customer service!
my very best regards, Ian

Hi Ian,

You can either park the car and meet her in the arrivals hall - there is only one door she can come through after she collects her baggage. If you get there early there is a coffee bar to the left of the hall so you could also tell her to look for you there or she can wait there if you are delayed.

If you do not want to park the car then tell her to go upstairs to the departures area as there are a couple of parking lanes there where you can wait for her in the car.

I don't know if you're aware that Malaga Airport is currently undergoing a huge expansion programme and the traffic can be a bit unpredictable - especially at Christmas - so my recommendation would be that you park in the short stay car park and meet her in the arrivals hall.

Linda

Hi Gary
I'm due to meet my sister from Malaga Airport on 27 December and wondered where the best place is for us to arrange to meet one-another

I will have flown to Spain some days ahead of her and will not be able to contact her after I leave the UK - hence the importance that we know exactly where to meet (I will be collecting her by car)

hoping that you can help! - many thanks, Ian Swift

Flight transfers at Madrid Airport

Hi Mel,

It depends on who you are travelling with as to whether your luggage can be checked right through. If you are travelling with the same airline operator for both flights then there should not be a problem.

If for any reason you do not make your connecting flight on the 24th then the airline is obliged to put you on their next available one. I see that that the 12.20 flight is operated by Iberia (which is the only one they handle on the 24th) and the only flight after that is an Easyjet one at 16.50, so your only option will be to try and get on that one.

Your return journey leaves you and your luggage enough time to transfer flights as long as there is no delay leaving Fuerteventura.

Linda

Hi Gary, on Monday 24th December we are travelling from Heathrow to Madrid leaving London 06.20am arriving Madrid Terminal 4 @ 09.40am (if on time!) we are then booked on the flight to Fuerteventura @ 12.20pm also from Terminal 4 obviously we have plenty of time if timings are kept, 2 questions (1) is our luggage transferred from one plane to the other? (2) what if the plane from Heatrhrow is late departing and we miss the Fuerteventura flight what are our options?

We are to do the reverse on the way back on 30th December but with only a 1hr 40mins time gap @Madrid to make the Heathrow connection. Your help & advice would be most appreciated.

This is the first time we have booked flights only, so just a bit concerned!!

Many thanks

Collecting a dog from Alicante Airport

Hi Linda,

Many thanks for the information.

Kind regards,

Hi Lynda and Colin,

Iberia Handling are the agents for Thomsonfly and will be responsible for your dog when it arrives on the 18th, and to be on the safe side I would ring them and ask them where you should go to collect it. I flew my animals over here several years ago and was told to go to cargo but they ended up going round on the luggage carousel! It seems that every handling agent has their own rules. The good news is that you are dealing with Iberia so they should have proper systems in place.

Linda

Hi Gary,

We are expecting to pick up a dog at Alicante airport on the 18th December.
It is arriving at Alicante at 1045hrs from Glasgow on a Thomsonfly flight.

Can you tell us where we will be able to pick up the dog? Cargo Centre etc. and where to find the location?
We have looked through the websites for the airport, tried Google but cannot find any info on dog collection!!!

Many thanks

Taking Pets through Madrid Airport

Gary,

I am very concerned for being certain I have all the papers required for my Maltese, 9 pounds to enter next Sunday, 23/12/2007 at the Madrid airport.

She has all the Vet papers and has a chip but I am afraid there may be problem as the chip is 9 digit Avid MicroChip and as I read about EU requirements in Spain it is 15 digit MicroChip she needs?

Can you advise me as I do NOT want to have a problem bringing her with us for our two stay in Spain.

I can purchase a scanner if this would be the answer.

Please let me know.

Thanking you,

Sue Olsen

Hi Sue,

I have looked up all the Aena (Spanish Airport Authority) regulations on microchip numbers and they state that is has to be a 15 digit (3 country code + 12 national ID) microchip number for their scanners to be able to read it. They also state that you can provide your own reader so I think to be on the safe side I would get one.

Linda

Linda,
Thank you SO much for your efforts and advice. I will have the scanner in hand and I believe I have all the paper work in order.

Appreciate your getting back to me, and wish you a Happy Christmas.

Collecting pets at Barcelona Airport

Brilliant, thanks!

Hi Regine,

Lufthansa fly into Terminal B. Their ground handling agents are Flightcare and it is worth checking just where they will hold your cat for collection. Their numbers are 932 983 330 or 932 971 134

Linda

Dear Linda,

thanks for the prompt and helpful info! I will arrive with Lufthansa on a direct flight from Germany.
Kind regards,
Regine

Hi Regine,

Most of the flights from Germany arrive in Terminal A. If this is the case then there is a "special baggage" carousel which your cat should appear on. Having said that, I have brought cats into Spain and the baggage handlers seem to be a law unto themselves, so I would double check with the ground handling staff for your flight who are normally at the door when you disembark from the plane.

If you want to check before you fly, let me know which airline you are flying with and I will give you the number for their ground staff at Barcelona Airport.

Linda

Dear Gary,

I was wondering if you knew where I could pick up my pets at Barcelona airport once me and them arrive on a flight from Germany?
Is there a special area to pick up this "special luggage"? I will travel with 2 cats - 1 in the cabin, 1 in the "special luggage area".
Many thanks,
regards,
Regine

Hi Gary

I need to travel from Murcia to Faro in the summer; I have
looked at all the options and there doesn't appear to be any direct
route via bus, train or plane. So it looks as if driving may be the
easiest option. I know its a long distance and just wondering if anyone
has any experience of driving this journey. Is it a relatively easy
drive? (straight roads, no hills!). If anyone has done it I would be
grateful if they could share their experience with me.

Cheers.

Travelling through Madrid Airport

Hi Arthur,

If you are travelling Iberia all the way you should be able to check your luggage right through from JFK to Tel Aviv. At Madrid there are connecting flights zones which means you should not have to pass through security and have plenty of time to make the connecting flight if your outward one is not delayed.

we booked a flight on iberia from jfk to tel aviv via madrid (about 1 1/2

Immigration at Tenerife South Airport

Hi Gary,

I have a Schengan visa from 21 Dec, but my flight arrives in Tenerife South at 21:45 on 20th Dec. Are the spanish authorities going to be problematic about such a thing?

Many thanks,
Mohit

Hi Mohit,

I would not like to guarantee that immigration will let you through on the 20th as the Spanish Airport Authorities can be very unpredictable and strictly speaking you cannot enter the country until the 21st. They may well make you wait in the transit area until midnight. If you can get it changed to the 20th I would do so.

Linda

Thanks so much Linda. Fully appreciate that the outcome is unpredictable, but I do appreciate your thoughts.

From speaking to some other people as well, it sounds like the worst case outcome is that they put us in the waiting/transit area for 2 hours, (rather than send us packing back to britain on that or the following day).

Given that we dont mind waiting the 2 hrs, and Tenerife South airport seems to be open 24hrs, I'm hoping that we should be fine.

But please do point it out, if there's anything additional you think I should also consider.

Kind regards,
Mohit

Hi Mohit,

As long as you have a valid passport and a Schengen visa for the 21st they will not send you back to the UK. Even the Spanish immigration are not that unpredictable!

Linda

Thanks so much!

ps - I love your website, it's very helpful indeed.

Transporting excess baggage

Ah, thank you. It's all become clear now!! Thanks. -Laura

Hi again Laura,

The "one piece of baggage" regulation is set to establish the maximum number of items, the weight and the specific size which will be carried free of charge in the hold of the aircraft. If any of these requirements are exceeded (number of items, weight per item and size of each item), the items will be considered excess baggage. So her second bag will be put through as excess.

Linda

Thanks. We thought that was probably what would happen. I have one other question to calm her worries: Does that mean she can have two checked bags even though the limits say one? Thanks again. -Laura Sievert

Hi Laura,

Afraid the only way your daughter can get her excess luggage into Barcelona is by paying for it I'm afraid. Her best (and safest) course of action would be to take it to Barcelona with her as excess baggage and then put it into luggage storage there until she leaves for the US. You can find details of left luggage storage charges at http://www.spanish-airport-guide.com/barcelona-airport.html

Linda

I have a question. Not sure I'm in the right place, but thought I'd
try. My daughter needs to fly from Madrid to Barcelona and then a
week later, fly from Barcelona to the US. She has too much baggage
for the Madrid to Barcelona flight. But should be okay for the
Barcelona to US flight. Is there a way to get the extra baggage from
Madrid to Barcelona and have it stored there for a few days before
she flies out without having to take it with her on the Madrid flight
and pay the extra weight charge? Thanks. -Laura

Hope you manage to locate the wallet.

Linda

Hi – hope you can point me in the right direction! My son left a wallet of games for this PSP on the Gatwick to Barcelona flight on Thursday 22nd November. WE tried to locate the Easy Jet lost property department at Barcelona but with no success. Coming back to England we went to lost property at Gatwick who gave us some numbers but I am hopeful you might be able to direct me to the proper number for Easy Jet Lost Property that I can either call or email. The wallet had about £200 worth of games in it so I am keen to locate it,

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Travelling through Madrid Airport

Hi Graham,

As she is travelling Iberia all the way she should be able to check her bags right through and not collect them until she arrives in Barcelona. This should be the same for her boarding card.

Linda

Hello Linda

Thanks for the swift and helpful reply.
Would you happen to know if my girlfriend will be given a boarding card at Moscow for the onward flight Madrid to Barcelona?

Thanks
Graham

Hi Graham,

The transfer should be easy for your girlfriend as although there is no special boarding gate for Barcelona flights, she is arriving and makes her transfer in satellite terminal 4S which is virtually all Iberia flights and she will find the boarding gate number of her flight clearly displayed on the TV monitors and departures board in that terminal. If she is at all worried about which way to go when she disembarks from the aircraft arriving from Russia then one of the cabin crew (who presumably speak Russian) will be able to direct her to the connecting flight area. Madrid is a large international airport and as long as she knows her flight number and has a piece of paper with it written on she will find someone to help her.

Linda

Hello Gary

I saw you very helpful replies to fliers and hope that you can help.

My girlfriend who is Russian is flying from Moscow to Barcelona via Madrid. She is very nervous because she speaks virtually no English and is worried about changing flights, something she has never done before, or in fact been out of Russia.
She is on IB 3811 and then changes to IB 6992 The flights appear to arrive and depart at terminal 4S.
What signs should she look for? Is there a standard boarding gate number for Barcelona flights?
Any help you can give to make her connection simple would be appreciated.
Thanks in advanec

Driving from Calahonda to Albufeira

Hi Teresa,

The drive from Calahonda to Albufeira is pretty straightforward with motorway all the way but it is a 485km drive which will take you around 5 hours. Most of the major car hire companies (Hetz, Avis, etc) will let you hire a car in one country and drop it off in another.

Linda

Hi Gary,

We will be staying in Calahonda next summer and want to drive on to Albufeira from there. Would you be able to give us an idea of how long it would take please?

Also, do you know if there would be any restrictions to taking a hire car across to Portugal? We're currently thinking of returning to Malaga airport for our flight home, but could look into the possibility of taking single flights so that we could return to the UK from Faro.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Lack of luggage trolleys at Alicante Airport

Hi Gary

I often travel through Alicante airport and the biggest bugbear is the lack of luggage trolleys, which have caused, on occasions, passengers almost coming to blows over the last remaining trolley.
Never seems to be a problem at other Spanish airports, or when returning to the UK from ALC as they all seem to be in the car park!
Any improvement that can be made to this situation would, I am sure, be most welcomed.

Their number is 933 708 790 or fax 933 708 790

My son, Per Lundberg, left Stockholm last Saturday, December 1st, at 8.05 AM by Spanair's plane to Barcelona and continued to a cruising ship. In Barcelona he found that his wallet was gone. He called me yesterday from the ship and wanted me to find out if it had been found in the cabin or at Barcelona's airport. It had not been found at Stockholm's airport. Can you help me?

Travelling from Jerez to La Linea

Hi Peter,

There are no direct trains or buses from Jerez to La Linea so I presume you will be hiring a car. It's a 118km journey which is mostly motorway and will take you about an hour and a half to drive. If you follow this link it will give you driving directions: http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/int/dyn/controller/ItiWGPerformPage?ie=utf-

Using internet in Portugal

Hi Grenville,

To be able to use the internet your best option is to find somewhere offering Wi-Fi which means "wireless fidelity". Wi-Fi hotspots are places where you can pick up the internet WiFi signal either for free or pay for it. Internet cafes, airports, hotels and some bars have these hotspots. Your laptop instructions should tell you whether it is "WiFi compatible" so that you can use this service.

The other ways to use the internet are via dial up or broadband but you need to be staying somewhere with a telephone line, have the correct cables (either LAN or telephone cable) to connect your laptop to the telephone socket and also have the correct telephone company discs to install it on your computer.

Hope this makes sense.

Linda

Hi Gary,
The wife and myself will be spending several weeks in the Algarve this winter (2008) I will be taking my laptop with me,
Can you please tell me in very plain language as I am not very computer literate how I go about logging on to the Internet, I would like to be able to send email's home and browse the net.
We are staying very near Albufeira.
Any help much appreciated,
Thanks,
Grenville East.
