What's the cheapest way to get up to Sierra Nevada?

Lost Luggage - Madrid Airportt

Hi Gary,
maybe you will be able to help me. My luggage has been lost for 3 weeks in Madrid airport. Today I got a call from the office of Aena and they told me they had found my bag. I was delighted. I called to Spanair - this is who I was claiming from and told them about the phone call. They said it was very ususual and they did not know anything about my luggage being found ! ! Do you have any other phone numbers I can ring in Madrid Airport - I am now desperate to have my bag back - I dont want the money, just my bag. Please help.
Regards,

Karen.

Lanzarote to Faro

Hi Gary
I want to fly from Lanzarote to Faro (Portugal) return, leaving approx 24-26 May, returning approx 4-6 June (but my dates are very flexible).

Can you tell me the cheapest/easiest/most convenient way to do this, please?

Also, could I go by boat? - I quite fancy a mini-cruise, if it was available!

Colette

My Reply...

Regarding a cruise---im not too sure.

However, you could fly from Lanzarote to Sevile with iberia. Some are direct some via Madrid. Then have a read of this previous question about travel between
Faro and Seville

I hope this helps

Hi Gary

Hello

Is it possible to tell me the nearest airport to Osasuna football club? and how many flights a day from Alicante? and on which days? want to leave Alicante before or on the 14th of March

Best wishes

My Reply...

Here is a list of all football teams in Spain and their nearest airports.

For internal flights you need to look at www.spanair.com , www.iberia.com , although i cannot find any direct flights. They seem to be via Madid or Barcelona.

Taking Pets to Spain

hello gary,

we are taking our dog to palma on a ba flight in april and wonder if you answer or help us with the following questions:
where do we collect her from?
How far is it from arrivals?
How long will it take to collect her?

If you have any english speaking contacts that can help us if you are unable, we would be really grateful.

Look forward to your reply

The martin family.

My reply...

This is all the information I can find from the Main Spanish Airport Website AENA.

"Pets accompanying their owners on a trip can be accepted as luggage when the corresponding tariff has been paid, regardless of the class in which the passenger is to fly.
As a general rule, these animals must be checked in and loaded into the hold of the aircraft, where they will be placed in a container which some airlines can provide.Sometimes they are allowed to fly with their owners in the passenger cabin, provided that the pet does not cause any bother to nearby passengers. The owner must fulfil certain requirements and is responsible for the pet's care and transport during the flight.
For this, the maximum measurements of the container must be respected, as well as the conditions of the maximum permitted weight of the animal with its container or cage, as applied by the airline and that should be previously consulted.

Animals must travel properly documented, through a pet passport or veterinary certificate, identified by way of a microchip or tattoo and with all required vaccinations (in some countries with an evaluation of antibodies). You can find more information at:
http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/index_en.htm.It is wise, when booking or purchasing the ticket either at the airline or the travel agency, to express your intention of taking a pet on board and to be informed of the specific conditions for transportation.
Guide dogsDogs trained as guides to accompany a passenger with a disability will, in general, travel in the cabin, unless prohibited by national regulations or the airlines. The dog's transport, whether in the hold or in the cabin, will not be charged. It is not necessary to carry out any special procedure, but the dog must wear a muzzle, collar and lead. If the dog is to travel in the cabin, it will be placed next to the passenger in a place indicated by the crew."

Then this was something that my friend wrote for me who brought her cats over.

Hi Jo,

Pet transport is a minefield! It depends on where you are flying in from. For example, if you are coming from Gatwick then only Monarch and British Airways will transport the animals and then only on certain flights (which tend to be a couple mid week) because they need to be on aircraft which have a special area between the passenger section and hold.

Also the airline will not necessarily guarantee that your pet will travel on the same flight and will probably ask you to check with the carrier. Both Bev and I had to do this and then they took 24 hours to get back to me. The person concerned needs to check with the airline they are using - www.ba.com is the best and this website has some pretty detailed information on transporting pets abroad like size and approved carrier type, etc.

When I brought the cats over from the UK they were checked in with me at the normal check in desk then taken away to the vet centre until they were ready to board. At Malaga they are meant to be left at cargo for you to collect, but mine were put on the luggage carousel in the arrivals hall! Bev has been told that she has to take her cat to cargo when she checks in so maybe the system has improved since I arrived.
So the short answer to your question is that it is up to the owner to make sure the airline carrier can accommodate the pet and book it on because the agents will not guarantee it. And the dog should be collected from the cargo section at Malaga but they should double check with the staff when they arrive here.

Hope this is not too muddled and answers your question!

I hope this gives you some idea.

Gettiing to Sitges & Gay Friendly Hotels in Sitges

Hi Gary,

I'm planning on travelling to Sitges early next month. Can you please advise me which airport is closer to Sitges-Girona or Reus? And from there, which is the best way to get to Sitges?Would I be better off flying to El Prat Airport and simply getting a train/bus directly to Sitges?

Although this option is more expensive. I'd also be grateful if you could recommend some reasonably priced gay friendly accommodation.

Thanks,Colin

My Reply...

Here is a previously answered question about Reus to Sitges.
Train Map from Barcelona Airport to Sitges

If you go to www.renfe.es this is the main line train then the cercanias is the local lines. YOu can see how much it will be from Reus to barcelona and girona to barcelona to change for barcelona to Sitges.
Regarding Gay Friendly and Resonably priced hotels....

Have a read here. Trip adviser is a really good webiste.
Good luck

Traveling from Gibraltar Airport

Gary - Do you do this for nothing?
In the past I have travelled to Gibraltar airport with golf clubs to stay and play golf in Spain. But vowed never to darken its doorstep again. I understand things have changed a bit since then.
My beefs were - 1 long queue to get a car across when customs guy would open your car boot, close it again and barely have the effort to nod to indicate you could move on! 2 If walking felt very vulnerable because of the number of beggars around. 3 steps up into border office and down again then have to get up curb to get into airport. I am not infirm or a wimp but it just made me so mad they made it SO difficult.
Regards Celia

My Reply...

Yes we do do this for nothing.

I know how you feel, we went to Gibraltar once and made the mistake of driving on. Queue getting on was about half hour. Queue getting of was over 2 hours in the boiling heat.
There are talks that the barrier will be opened one day but until then, its still quite the same.
We very rarely go there now and if we do we park by Mcdonalds in La Linea and walk through.
I do know a few people that fly from Gibraltar but then they get someone to pick the up from the other side of the border. But going through the customs can sometimes be bother depending on the mood of the guards!

I hope this makes you feel a little better that its not just you.

Many thanks for your response. I do appreciate it. Regards, Celia

This has kindly been posted by someone who has very recently been to Gibraltar.

Hi Gary
Just browsing your website this morning (which by the way is veryinformative) and noted your comments on Gib Airport.Border restrictions are very relaxed now and queues barely exist. 2'nothing to declare' lanes and one 'to declare' lane are now in operationentering Gib and 1 'nothing to declare' and 1 'to declare' lane areoperational existing Gib crossing over to Spain.Remember to keep in the right hand lane existing otherwise you will haveto move quickly to the right after passport control.

The system is in itsinfancy but over recent weeks I haven't encountered any or very littledelay. As I live in Sotogrande its cheaper to buy cigarettes over theborder but was always such a pain before this happened.A new airline 'FlyGibraltar' is due to be announced shortly covering theUK and Ireland and also flights are now coming in from mainland Spain.Hope the above clarifies the situation now.

Taking Milk in Hold Luggage

Hi Gary,
Flying into Palma this September.
Due to a lactose intolerance my wife cannot drink normal milk. We can buy cartons of long life lactofree milk in the UK and I would like to know if milk products are permitted to be taken into Majorca.
If so, would it be safe in hold luggage if well wrapped.
Many Thanks

Brian

My Reply...

I dont see why not if its in hold luggage but it might be a good idea to check with the airline you are flying with just in case.

We are in Marbella and Soya / Lactose free is quite common here, I often long life soya milk t for my little girl to drink.

It may be worth finding a local forum and post a question on it like www.holidaytruths.com or www.britishexpats.com

I hope this helps

Hotels near Bilbao

Hi !I'm arriving at Bilbao airport late on 4 June. Is there a good hotel nearby?Or near the city terminal of the airport bus?

Thanks

My Reply...

Here is a list of 4 hotels that are the nearest to Bilbao Airport

What a good thing to do is to search the name in google or go to www.tripadvisor.com

There are a number of personal reviews which are really helpful. It depends on what you want.

If you are happy just to be close to the hotel, then you probably wont have any bars or restaurants near you.

It would be great to hear how you got on.

Fuerteventura to Gibraltar

Hello from the uk I was wondering if you could give me some advice. We will be in Fuerteventura this August 14th-28th and are thinking of going from there during our stay to Gibraltar to get married.Do you know the easiest way we can travel to and from gibraltar from fuerteventura? Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thankyou

Tina

My Reply...

This is a tough one.
I cannot find any direct flights

Just Iberia via Madrid to Malaga or Spanair via Madrid to Jerez which is about 1 hour from Gibraltar.

Then if you hire a car which would be the quickest way, drive or there are buses but that will take you a long time.

Have a look at Malaga Internal Flights, it may be easier to leave from a different airport nearer you and fly direct to Malaga from there.
I hope this helps. If you find anything better please let us know so we can post it up.

Zaragoza Airport to Barcelona

Hi
Hi Gary please could you tell me how much a taxi for x7 people zaragoza airport to Barcelona would cost please ,
Many thanks

Andy

My Reply...

Zaragoza Airport to Barcelona is a long way. Around 300 kms depending on where abouts in Barcelona Etc.

We normally work on around 1€uro a km plus a little extra.

You will need to find a taxi big enough as many only take 4. So then you would need 2 taxis.

You could look at getting a train at www.renfe.es

The price for all or part of each 24-hour period is €4.60 for a large locker, €4,10 for a medium locker and €3.60 for a small locker. Bus from Vitoria to Vitoria Airport

Hi Gary,

I was hoping you could give me some information about the bus schedule from Vitoria to the airport, when it runs, how long it takes etc. I am hoping to catch the 14.10 to Dublin on Friday 30 March.

Thank you,Caren McGuire

p.s In one of your other questions, it mentioned San Adrian and transport problems. The nearest train station is Calahorra and the buses are almost non existent. If they go to the bus station in Calahorra, near the town hall there is a time table there. To get to almost anywhere of interest they will have to go to Calahorra to Logrono (1 hr) then Logrono to the city of choice (4.5 hours Madrid, 2.5 hours Bilbao, 2 hours Zaragoza (from Cal)).

You were right when you said it was a remote place!

Here I have provided you with as mouch information as I can find. There doesnt look to be many buses.

Wheelchair Assistance Malaga Airport

An 81 year old lady who is travelling alone and is arriving on Sunday the 18th March from Birmingham using Monarch and has booked wheelchair assistance.

Can you explain what the procedure is from leaving the aircraft through to us meeting her at the arrivals area.

She will have 1 suitcase and usual hand luggage.

Thank you for your assistance.

Claire Wilkinson

My Reply...

Hi Claire
You didnt mention which airport she will be arriving at.

However, For example Malaga Airport.

You can check other airports by choosing at the top left.

These questions are very common...in our experience there are always buggies that take you from the plane to the luggage carosel.

Your contract is with the airline who she is flying with so you should mention it to them and then once again on the plane she should mention that she may need help to the stewards.

I hope this helps.

Hi John

Sorry for the delay, but we have been recieiving numerous questions everyday and try and answer all of them.

We receive numerous questions about people who need help when travelling around spain. We are trying to collect as much information as possible and always ask if possible to let us know how you get on so we can continue to give more information
Here is aboutAbout access in airports
Bus from Reus Airport

A forum for you to ask questions and speak to other people who use wheelchairs
Im not entirely sure what will happen, but from experience, most buses are quite modern and are fully equipped for you to go straight on.

Regarding the plane, im not too sure, sometimes you get to go straight on through the tunnel, sometimes you have to go up the steps, it depends on the airline too.
I hope I have given you enough information and would love to hear how you got on so we can continue to get as much information for other people in your circumstances.
