Getting from Reus Airport to Sitges

Thanks Jan,

I really appreciate your taking the time to give such full feedback which I will post on the message and FAQs boards so that other travellers can draw on your experience.

Good job you weren't in a hurry! But the sun's shining and why rush around ...

Regards

Linda

Right – well I did it, quite a pleasant journey, but can't be done in a rush.

On advice from Information at Reus airport, I took the airport bus to Salou railway station. The bus drops off at various hotels en route to the station, so it took about 25 mins – and that was after waiting for 25 mins for it to leave Reus Airport in the first place. Then I had to wait 1 hr for a train to St Vincenc, where I then had a 15 minute wait to change for another train to Sitges. Very pretty route though and, as I wasn't in too much of a hurry, it was nice to journey 'locally'. However, from landing at Reus to arriving at Sitges, it took 4 hours. A colleague of mine did exactly the same journey slightly earlier in the day and took 3 hrs because he did not have the long waiting times. However, it is VERY CHEAP : Airport bus to Salou, Euro 5.60; train Salou-Sitges, Euro 4.25.

One way to make the journey quicker is to get a taxi from the airport to the railway station, and not hang around for the airport bus. I have since discovered that Reus or Tarragona stations are equally useful – you can get trains to St Vincenc from Salou, Reus or Tarragona.

Coming home I decided to do Sitges/Barcelona Sants/Reus. The trains between Barcelona and Sitges are very frequent throughout the day, so that entire return journey to Reus station took 2¼ hours. I bought the ticket at Sitges right through to Reus and it cost Euro 4.25. I did need a taxi from Reus (which you have to telephone for, so rehearse your Spanish for "I'd like a taxi from the station to the airport"!) and that cost 17 Euro; the bus from the station to the airport is very infrequent. The taxi took 15 mins.

Actually, I did stop off in Tarragona for a couple of hours because I had the time – interesting town and worth a look round – and there were loads of taxis outside that station, so that might be a better bet. And the distance Tarragona or Reus to the airport is about the same.

So the route : Reus station - Barcelona Sants – Sitges, by rail, is definitely the fastest – it's just frustrating that at some point the train whizzes through Sitges without stopping and you know you are having to go north past Sitges, before coming back down to it!

Cheers and good luck to all who venture

Dear Jo,

I'm afraid you're right - all direct public transport routes to Sitges from Reus go via Barcelona. You can get the train timetables from Reus to Barcelona at www.renfe.es and there is a bus from Barcelona Airport to Tarragona which stops in Castelldefels, Ribes, Sitges, Rocamar, Roquetes, Vilanova, Cubelles, Cunit, Segur, Calafell and El Vendrell. The bus stops are in front of the Joan Miró mural in terminal B and in front of terminal C. The timetable from the airport is Monday through Friday departing hourly between 7:40 am and 22:40 pm; Saturdays, every two hours between 8:40 am and 10:40 pm; Sundays and holidays, every three hours between 9:40 am and 9:40 pm. If you do decide to pursue this route it is worth just double checking the bus times on 0034 938 937 060

We get asked this question quite a lot so if you do decide to go the public transport way your feedback on how it went would be appreciated.

Regards,

Linda

I really, really wish I hadn't done this now, but to get to Sitges I've booked a flight from Liverpool to Reus because it was cheaper than Manchester-Barcelona. But now it's impossible to get from Reus to Sitges without going first to Barcelona, it seems. I think I'll just cut my losses – lose my money on the flight I've booked and go for the Manchester-Barcelona, then get the train straight from Barcelona Airport. Unless anyone has done the Reus-Sitges trip without a hire car????
