Car Hire from Faro to Malaga

We just wondered if you were able to track down a car hire company which would enable us to drive from Faro to Malaga. We are travelling to Portugal in June 07 and would appreciate your comments.

I would try Avis, Alamo or Europcar as they all have branches in Malaga.

You can get all the car hire telephone numbers etc here

It would be good if you could let us know how you got on and what extra it cost so we can advise other tarvellers

Only the larger hire companies (we tried Hertz Avis and Europcar) would actually operate from Portugal to Spain but were extortionate - anything from £800 -£1200.

The problem was that most companies would not cross the border - something to do with the risk of getting there cars back - or so they said!! So we would have had to drive from Lagos to the border - cross the border by cab or other means and then hire another car in Spain!!

It was becoming far too complicated - so we've now decided to fly to Malaga (we have an apartment near there) and drive to Lagos - and then it will only cost us the normal 2 weeks hire charge!!

Great info, thanks for letting us know. We regularly drive from Marbella to Portugal. If you dont know there is a new road at Algeciras that goes all the way to Jerez & Seville then onto Portugal. Its a lovely new road with beautfiul scenery on the way.

So Algeciras, turn right and follow the road!

Thanks for all your help - yes we are aware of the new road as we drove to Seville last year from Malaga - but hearing your description of the drive to Portugal - we are now really looking forward to it.
