Costa De La Luz Guide

There is a wonderful part of Spain called the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light), based in Andalucia southern Spain it has been left unspoilt by the mass tourism which is so often seen in Spain.

The area has been developed on a more sympathetic scale than the Costa del Sol and the local towns and resorts retain their Spanish culture and character. From city breaks, sporting holidays to beach holidays, there really is something for everyone in this part of Spain.

The Costa de la Luz is the home to some of Spains most beautiful beaches, deep and wide, stretching for miles they don't suffer the high rise development that so many tourist resorts see. Due to the size of the beaches you are guaranteed to find a nice quiet spot to sit and soak up the area. If you are into water sports there is no better place to visit with the wind-surfing / kitesurfing mecca Tarifa and El Palmar another well know surfing spot located in the Cadiz region of the Costa de la Luz.

For those who want an active holiday the cities of Jerez, Seville & Cadiz are wonderful places to explore and offer great city breaks. You also have some wonderful white villages like Medina Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera and Arcos de la Frontera to visit with their breathtaking views, wonderful atmosphere and winding streets.

The weather in the Costa de la Luz can get hot in the summer months but when visiting the beach resorts the breeze from the Atlantic coast makes it feel more comfortable. The winter weather is usually mild which is excellent for people keen on sports.

If you want to spend your holiday in a Spanish part of Spain then the Costa de la Luz is the place to come. With easy access from several airports including Jerez, Seville, Gibraltar, Malaga and Faro you are only hours away from your perfect holiday.

ARTICLE FROM

Zoe & Adrian Leeson who set up www.Costa-Luz-Holiday.com to provide holiday-makers with everything they need to organise their perfect holiday to the Costa de la Luz Spain. With hundreds of holiday / vacation rentals listed by owners and in-depth tourist information on each holiday resort it has everything you need for your perfect holiday in Spain.

Flights from Jerez

Jerez is becoming a busier airport and Monarch have just announced that they are flying to Jerez from Manchester in March next year (2007).

So this week I flew in and out of Jerez Airport, partly because the flights were cheap and partly because I wanted to use the airport and see if the journey from Marbella was worthwhile.

We flew out last Tuesday on the 1135 flight through Ryanair, we left home at 8am and had a straight forward drive up to Jerez via the A7 Autopista and then taking the A381 up to Jerez from Algerciras. The Journey took 1 hour and 40 minutes and was about 170 kms. (full driving info here)

The first and only really annoying thing about using Jerez Airport is that the long term parking is expensive. At the moment there is a dodgy looking guy by a caravan on the way into the airport who says he does long term parking but it's not clear for how much, or you go into the normal car park in the airport where the fee is €9 per day. Not the end of the world I know but a lot more than the €3 per day I pay at Malaga Airport.

However, the car park is only about 20 metres from the terminal building and it is easy to pull up outside the departures door and offload your luggage etc before going to park.

The queue for the Ryanair check in desks was long but quick and because the airport deals with such a small number of flights there are not that many people milling about.

If you want to buy a magazine or newspaper (in English) then make sure you buy one before you go through to the Departures Hall, the newsagents is on the left before the baggage x-ray machine. i forgot and had to go out and back through the baggage check again.

In the departures hall there is a cafe selling coffees (€1.20), beers and sandwiches, crisps etc and an Aldeasa shop where you can buy Spanish priced Cigarettes, perfumes etc. There are plenty of seats and a lot of room. Once boarding is announced you walk about 50m from the terminal building to the plane.

Flying back into Jerez was equally as pleasent, a short 50m walk into the terminal building from the plane, a 2 minute queue for Passport control and a 10 minute wait for the bags. After that it was a 50 metre walk to the car and a 95 minute drive home.

Summary

If I compare flying out of Jerez with flying out of Malaga then I would always fly out of Jerez. The 90 minute car journey can be a pain for some people but for us it's a 45 minute drive to and from Malaga Airpoirt and then the long term car parks are another 20 mins of messing around, if you add on the loooooooooong walk to the baggage hall after you have landed I reckon Malaga is only just quicker!

Add in the peace and quiet and relaxing atmosphere of Jerez Airport and for us (travelling with a toddler) it made the journey a lot easier.

For those of you heading down to the Costa Del Sol from Jerez don't rely on public transport, give it a bit of time and there may be a direct bus route but at the moment it's not worth the saving. Watch this space because I think the routes back to the UK from here are going to expand and unlike Reus & Girona the airport is already big enough to handle it.

Flights & Car Hire Almeria Airport

On Wed Jun 28 10:18 , jill woolley sent:

Hi Gary

I hope you can help me, im looking for cheap flight to
almeria from birmingham, also the cheapest car hire
company from airport, were are thinking of buying an
apartment in vera (vera coast)and as it stands the
flights are mostly to murcia and alicante these are
quite a distance from the apartment and the taxis are
very very expensive.

so can you please help me in anyway to aleivate the
cost from airport to apartment. ie. car hire, nearer
airport or bus companies that do the trip.

hoping you can help

many thanks

jill

My Reply

Hi Jill

As far as I know these are the airlines and airports that provide flights to Almeria from the UK.

The following airlines fly to Almeria from the following airports; BA Iberia fly from Gatwick,   Easyjet from Gatwick and Stansted,   Flybe from Birmingham,   Mytravellite from Birmingham, Monarch from Manchester and Ryanair from Stansted.

So it looks like flybe or Mytravel for you!

With regards to car hire I always recommend www.hoildayautos.co.uk, I can't say that they are definately the cheapest at every airport but they are always there or there abouts.

If I were you I would try one of the companies below and see what deals you can do on the basis that you would be a regular customer. The car hire companies actually in the airport at Almeria are:

Centauro at Almeria Airport   Europa Rent a Car at Almeria Airport   Rucar at Almeria Airport   Solmar at Almeria Airport   Europcar at Almeria Airport

Almeria is a growing area so I wouldn't be surprised to see more and more routes flying there in the future, especially with Easyjet and Monarch!

Let us know if you find a good "local" cheap car hire company or any other flights and we can add the info to our site.

Hope this helps

Valencia to Mojacar

Do you know the best way to get from Valencia airport to Mojacar? If not Mojacar then Valencia (airport or otherwise?) The train website is very confusing!

On Wed Jun 28 3:45 , Dave Bubier sent:

Hi Kimberley, This was way to complicated for me so I got travel expert Dave Bubier to answer it for you, If you do decide to make the journey let us know how it went!

In essence, the nearest railhead (Aguilas - still a long way from Mojacar) reached from Valencia would tax the most ardent rail-buff, in fact I am wondering if the line still functions!

Coming in via Valencia means allowing a day - if not two - for onward transit. You can get a coach towards Almeria, five a day, spaced fairly evenly through the 24 hours ww.alsa.com some should stop at somewhere like Vera, thats only about half-an hour away and I detect some local services to Mojacar. You are talking at least six or seven hour journey or more.

If I were to choose an airport for Mojacar it would, oddly, be Granada. Autedia Maestra (www.maestra-autedia.com) run two journeys a day (four hours) to Mojacar.

Lost Luggage at Madrid Airport

On Tue Jun 27 22:00 , 'Marta Sheffield' sent:

Hello Gary,
my daughter was unable to board her flight from Madrid to Miami today
(6/27/06) and thought that her luggage had left without her. However,
she was re-scheduled to fly out of Madrid on Friday 6/30, it seems that
America Airlines pulled her luggage from the original flight (#69), when
she did not board the plane. But, at the time they were re-scheduling
her they did not know whether here luggage was in the air or on the
ground.
In the meantime she went back home to Granada and now her luggage is
somewhere at the Barajas Airport. Is there a phone number where we can
call to let them know that she will return for her luggage on Friday
6/30/06? What's the policy? How long will they hold her luggage for
her?
Please advise.
Thanks,
Marta Sheffield

Hi Martha

The best thing to do is call the Amnerican Airlines "lost Luggage" department on: 902 013 787

Baggage Handlers at Alicante Airport

Would you know who the handling agents for Monarch airlines and Globespan are at Alicante airport? Do they have a website or an email address I can contact? Thankyou for your help.

Hi Miriam

Cant find the info you need, they used to have them listed but not now!

Flyglobespan just have there Scottish number listed but Monarch have an office at the airport and the number is:
General information and bookings telephone number:
914 141 500

I would call them and ask them who the luggage handlers are.

Alternatively these are the 3 main baggage handlers at the airport and who they look after, I am sure one of them must also look after Monarch and or Flyglobespan...

Hi there,
After a bit of info. if possible...?
There's a chance I might be flying into Jerez staying the night, and then I'd like to travel down to Algericias Port.
So firstly is it easy to find a nice local hotel to stay the night and secondly is there local/public transport to travel down to Algericias? (also how long does this take?)
Any Info would be much appreciated.!
Many thanks!

Hi Byron,

Yes there are plenty of buses from Jerez down to Algerciras, you will find all the timetables and details that you need here:
Linesur.com

Yellow boxes = weekdays

orange boxes = weekends

Green Boxes = Mondays & Fridays

Dont forget that you will need to get from the airport into Jerez City center (by bus or taxi is easy)

Jerez City Center is also a good place to find a Hotel for an overnight stay, I stayed at the Tryp Hotel In Jerez

But there are plenty of cheaper alternatives!

Hope this helps and let us know how the journey went

Hi Gary,
What airlines flies Malaga to Girona? I ahve booked my trip and am not sure how to do this..I have looked everywhere..pls help as soon as you can..
TAHNK YOU,
Michelle

MY REPLY

Hi Michelle

I would love to be able to fly from Malaga to Girona as I have to go to South Western France about 6 times per year but alas...... Even Iberia (Spains national airline) don't fly there.

You have a couple of choices.....

1) Fly to Barcelona and drive / train / taxi to Girona more info here: http://www.spanish-airport-guide.com/girona-barcelona.html

Or....fly back to the UK and out to Girona with Ryanair who are the only scheduled airline to fly to Girona!

I always fly to Barcelona and drive up it's not that bad a drive...

Good luck

Any advise really appreciated

MY REPLY

Hi Anne

For trains goto www.renfe.es, you can go from Bilbao to Montpellier by train, I can't find the timetables and the trains don't seem to run everyday so play around with the site. You can put it in English by clicking the flag on the left.

You can then get a train from Motnpellier to Cannes: http://www.raileurope.co.uk/

It may be better to call the numbers below (or email them) for Rail Europe who may have better suggestions and times for going direct from Bilbao to Cannes:

European Tickets:

Email enquiries: reservations@raileurope.co.uk
Opening Hours: Mon to Fri 8.00am-9.00pm, Sat 9.00am-6.00pm, Sun 10.00am-5.00pm

For flying you would need to go to Madrid and change flights for Marsielle or Nice with www.iberia.es

Murcia Airport Terminal

I will be traveling to Murcia on Sunday with an elderly parent who is not able to walk very fast and and becomes tired easily.

What is the travel distance from the aircraft to the baggage hall, and if it is a long way, is there transport available for the infirm? If transport in available how does one reserve a seat?

We had an experience at Malaga Airport two years ago when we found that it was a very long walk from aircraft to baggage hall and my father became very tired.

Regards,

Helen Mitchell

MY REPLY

Helen

Murcia is one of the few airports that I havent travelled through myself, I aim to get up there in the next motnh or so. My knowledge is therefore a bit limited.

The best thing to do is contact your airline, they will normally organise all these things.

You should also checkout the FAQs on the airlines website.

I flew into Jerez yesterday and Ryanair organised all assistance for elderly and disabled passnegers.

Hope this helps and the trip goes well. If the airline won't help let us know and we will see what we can do.

If after the trip you could let us know what happened we can advise other travellers with much better information in the future.

My question is whether there are any bars in the airport that would show the match shortly after we land or whether we would need to get to the city centre.

wary about doing it I dont suppose you could send

Lynsey

MY REPLY

Hi Lindsay

I am away at the moment and cant get to my emails as often as I would like!

On Tuesday I drove from my home in Marbella (1 km from Puerto Banus) to Jerez and flew to Stansted with Ryanair.

It took 90 minutes!

Take the A -381 to Los Barrios / Algerciras from Jerez and then at Algeciras take the A7 / N340 towards Malaga. When the road splits after Gibralatar take the Toll roads to Malaga for easier driving!

It;s about 100 kms from Jerez to Algerciras and 75 kms from Algerciras to Marbella!

Getting off the motorway and finding Puerto banus can be tricky though! Leave the toll road at the SAN PEDRO junction, head for the sea (you can see it) and follow the signs.

For proper directions go to www.theaa.com and to see it on a map goto http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=aeropuerto+de+jerez+spain&ie=UTF8&ll=36.745487,-6.061707&spn=1.584582,3.449707&om=1

Car Hire Returns At Malaga Airport

Hi Gary

I am flying out to Malaga for a weeks hol in Frigiliana on 15th July

We pick up and drop hire car from airport. We will be dropping car around 8am / 9am on return journey. Any idea how bad the traffic might be then? We estimate it will take an hour to get to our villa (4.5kms from frigiliana)

We are also considering stopping at supermarket en route - any ideas?

look forward to hearing from you

kind regards

Cathy Taylor

MY REPLY

Hi Cathy

I am away at the moment and cant answer my emails as much as I would like to!

There is not much traffic at Malaga Airport at 9am in the morning, there is a lot or work going on at the airport at the moment but at that time of the morning you should be OK, Spain doesnt wake up till 10am!

An hour seems about right to me.

I live at the other end of the Costa del Sol so I am going from memeory but there is a large "Shopping Center" with supermarkets etc about 15 kms before Nerja, think its called El Ingenio but could be wrong! it's very visable from the road!

If not I am sure that there will be a supermarket in Frigiliana.

Any other advice would be great. We are looking at staying in a villa somewhere near Malaga.

Cheers,
Alistair

MY REPLY
Hi Alistair

Sorry for the delay in coming back top you but I am in the Uk travelling

If your in Malaga then Granada is the best airport to aim for, only about 60 mins drive from Malaga City, if your nearer to Marbella (50 kms along the coast) the Jerez is the better airport.

Bus is good from Granada City Center Bus Station down to Malaga but driving is easy and car hire quite cheap, checkout our airport page for the car hire companies there: http://www.spanish-airport-guide.com/granada-airport.html

Buses from Jerez to anywhere along the Costa del Sol are rubbish so driving the only real option!

We have just flown from Jerez and live in Marbella, journey time 90 mins and good roads!

Good luck and if you do get the bus let us know what the journey was like so we can help other people

Air Europa and Spanair offer flights but the kids would need to change flights at Barcelona!

Valencia Airport to The Oceanografic

On Tue Jun 20 6:58 , 'elodie nerambourg' sent:

Hi Gary!!

I would like to fly from Paris To Valencia and just see The Oceanografic. Is
it possible to do it in one day (flying, visiting)?
How do you get to the Oceanografic from the airport (train, bus)?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Take care

Elodie

MY REPLY

Hi Elodie

I have to admit I had never heard of The Oceanografic before your email (I live in the south!) but the best way of getting there looks like the bus from Valencia airport...

I took this off their website for you...
By Coach and Bus

Valencia coach station is located on the bank of the former course of the River Túria. This is the stopping place for regular services arriving from all over Spain. To get to the City of Arts and Sciences from here, just cross the river and catch EMT bus nº95

The following EMT buses go the City of Arts and Sciences: : 19, 35, 95 and 40

The direct airpot bus to Valencia City center are as follows:

Direct City - Airport Bus

Airport departures-Avenue del Cid (opposite to Local Police Office)- St. Bailén-St. Ángel Guimerá (next to Juán Llorens street)-Avenue del Cid-Airport departures.

From 6.00 to 22.00. - Every 20 minutes.

Fare 2.5 €

As I havent been there I cant say whether you can do everything in one day, you could try asking at one of this forum:

Hope that you have a great time it sounds amazing!

Long Term Parking ValenciaAirport

On Mon Jun 19 12:53 , 'trison' sent:

Hi Gary,

Is it possible to rent a car parking space on an annual basis at Valencia
and if so what is the cost?

I am based in London and 1 hr from Valencia. I am thinking about buying a
car for Spain rather than keep hiring every other 6 weeks but I would need
to leave the car at the airport most of the time.

Many thanks,

Tony.

Buses from Reus Airport to Sitges

On Sun Jun 18 10:50 ,
Hi Gary.
Can you please advise on the following :-
We will be arriving at Reus Airport on the 8th July 2006 at approx 9:20am Saturday morning.
We wish to get to Sitges. Can you advise on the least expensive method of transportation
thats available to us?
We don't mind if the route is not directly to Sitges, maybe via more accessible town/city
which would arrive us at Sitges.
Can you also advise same for our departure from Sitges which is the 22nd July 2006.
Our flight out of Reus is 22:15.
Regards.
Pete + Phillip.

Hi Guys

My friend Dave Bubier answered this one, reading between the lines it's best to get the bus or taxi into Tarragona bus station and then pick up the coastal bus to Sitges.....

RENFE would appear to be an option but I am a little puzzled by the actual lines in use in the area - will have to consult my rail expert.

There is a Reus station but probably getting first to Tarragona is better. There do not appear to be many trains en route to Barcelona that stop at Sitges, not sure why.
All in all the bus seems the best bet (having got into Tarragona from the airport) the service along the coast to Barcelona appears to be hourly throughout the day.

Bus from Reus to Tarragona only seems to run Mon - Friday though! Might be worth calling the bus company first or just hopping in a cab for a €15 taxi ride to Tarragona bus station!

Airport - Tarragona - Airport

Mondays to Fridays: 07:25, 08:25, 09:25, 12:55, 13:55, 14:55, 17:55, 18:55 and 19:55.

The fare is only €3 and for further information you can call: 0034 977 770 698.

Let us know how you get on so we can help other poeple in the future

Getting from Girona to Tossa de Mar

Hi Gary!
Do you know how I get from Girona Airport to Hotel Delfi Tossa De Mar on Sun 23rd July apart from a taxi?
Jan T Iversen

Answered by Dave Bubier

There is a coach service from Girona Airport to the coastal resorts, www.sagales.com provides the links. Tossa de Mar is only served by departures at 1015 and 1430 (55-min journey), returning at 1125 and 1540. Depends how ones flight times fit around that.

Left Luggage at Valencia Airport

On Sun Jun 18 15:59 , 'TARA PARKER' sent:

Hi Gary
We are home swapping with a family from Valencia in August this year, we are planning to meet at London Heathrow to exchange car keys and cars on Saturday 19th August. However on our return journey this is not possible as we are departing at the same time! We are wondering if there is a left luggage department at Valencia airport where we will be able to leave the parking ticket and car keys in a parcel for the spanish family to collect on there return? I know this is possible at Heathrow as we have done this before and also if there is a left luggage department, will it still be open at 20.00hrs on a Saturday night? If there isn't can you make a suggestion of where we can leave the items for them?
Best wishes
Tara Parker

My Reply

Hi Tara,

Tricky one, I can't find any info on left luggage at Valencia, they must have something there though....

You can call them on 0034 961 598 500 and check, the main Information counters at the Spanish Airports are always open if the airport is open!

The worst case scenerio is that you take the keys home and post them back, (they of course would need to have spare car keys on them!) You could leave the parking ticket in the car and text them or call their mobile when you park to let them know where the car is parked.

Let us know how you get on so that we can pass on this tip to other tarvellers, I have also posted this on the message board so watch out for any replies that may help.

I am planning a trip up to Valencia, Murcia and Alicante over the summer to find out all these kind of things!

Regards

Gary
