Q - I have special needs and may require assistance or a wheelchair at the airport, can this be arranged?
Wheelchair Passengers or Passengers with Special Needs or Medical Conditions
For safety reasons the number of passengers with restricted mobility carried on each flight is limited and is subject to numbers and therefore passengers with special requirements MUST BOOK BY PHONE (all online discounts will be honoured).
If after discussion it is agreed that we are able to meet your requirements we will record the type and level of assistance required, for use by our airport Check-In staff and aircraft Cabin Crew.
Our Call Centre can be contacted on 0131 466 7609 between the hours of 9.00am to 7.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm Saturday and 10.00am to 5.00pm Sunday.
If you wish to book outside of these hours you may do so online however, it is a condition of carriage that you contact us by telephone on 0131 466 7609 no later than the day after booking to submit your request for assistance. If we are unable to comply with your request a full refund will be granted.
We would caution any passengers with special needs requirements against leaving notice of their needs until they arrive at the airport as there is no guarantee that we will in anyway be able to comply with their requests/requirements. It will in all probability be impossible for the check-in staff to assist them and they will have to seek assistance or advice from our Ground Handling Agents.
Should you have special needs and require the presence of a care assistant, then please ensure that you arrange for one to travel with you. There shall be a maximum of two special needs passengers per care assistant. The care assistant will need to comply with the same obligations as all other passengers.
Only wheelchairs and mobility aids weighing 60kgs or less (excluding battery), whereby no single piece weighs in excess of 32kgs can be accepted for travel. Wheelchairs are carried on a limited release basis, i.e. entirely at your own risk for loss, damage or delay; flyglobespan strongly recommends passengers obtain adequate travel insurance to cover them in such circumstances.
Wheelchairs that are powered by (dry-cell) sealed, non-spillable types of battery are also acceptable for carriage. Wheelchairs meeting our criteria will be carried free of charge in addition to the passengers normal baggage allowance. Flyglobespan will not carry wheelchairs with (wet-cell) un-sealed, spillable batteries.

flyglobespan are probably the most unhelpful airline you will ever have to deal with when it comes to dealing with passengers with special needs

Is there any way I can contact Palma airport direct to ask for wheelchair assistance when our flight lands. My husband has walking difficulties and would require the use of a wheelchair to take him from the aircraft to the terminal building where we collect the luggage. The airline (flyglobespan) have stated that they have allocated all their spaces for people who require assistance and therefore are unable to arrange anything for us.
All we require is help getting from the aircraft to the main building purely because of the size of the airport.

MY REPLY
Hi Tricia
Try these different numbers: 0034 971 789 924 (Palma Airport Special Services) or 0034 971 789 099
If it's any consulation I was at Jerez Airport the other day and the staff were great with "special needs" passengers, thinking about it each time I also fly into Malaga there is always an Electronic Buggy waiting by the landing area to take elderly and infirm passengers.
I am sure that if you can't organise something in advance they will help when you are there although I realize this doesn't ease the worry.
Below is a whole section I have taken from the "official" Spanish Airport Website which states their policies for Diabled passenegers, unfortunately the emphasis is on those elaving not arriving!
Hope this helps and good luck, let us know what happens when you travel so that we can help other travellers, we are getting many emails from "less abled" passengers and it would be great to pass on some first hand advice in the future.

Gary

I have just been to Majorca on 2 weeks holiday. I had a hire car but when I arrived at the airport I was told that there was no help to get me to the car park as insurance did not cover their staff. On the Saturday I came home I had to struggle from the car park to the terminal in torrential rain pushing my father (who is a very large man) in a wheelchair and attempting to push a trolley with the luggage. Everyone I asked for help refused to give any and when I rang Palma Airport before I travelled I was just told you will have to manage as we do not have porters. It was a real struggle I could not believe that no one cared.
This kind of service at the airpots is nuts!
Can I ask which car hire company you used, lets name and shame them!
Also I am sad that the Spanish staff seem to be turning into "jobsworths!" it's this kind of attitude that will eventually kill the tourist trade!
I hope that you have a better holiday next year!
Regards
Gary
