Castellon Airport - North of Valencia

We just had this email from one of our website's visitors, if you have any info about Castellon airport can you let me know..

On Fri Feb 17 9:10 ,
Hi Gary

I was wondering if you have any knowledge of the new airport in Castellon
(north of Valencia).

I have seen the Villareal football team being sponsered by
aeropuertocastellon but I cannot find any information.

This new airport is ideal for the Costa Azahar region of Spain which is
lovely.

Hope you can help me, look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Carole Carter

My Reply

Hi Carole

There is very little information about the airport at the moment, below is a link to the only article that I have seen in the last 6-9 months!

http://www.thinkspain.com/news-spain/10530

I suspect that the airport is owned by the owners of Villareal Football team, they are a very wealthly Spanish family.

Until a UK carrier such as Ryanair or Easyjet announce routes there or until Aena (www.aena.es) the Spanish Airport authority make more announcements there's not much more I can add.

Two local sites where you might get more information from the forums etc are http://www.valenciatrader.com/ & http://www.inlandtrader.net/mem_online_edition.php

If you do get any news can you share it with me so that I can set up a page dedicated to it and help other travellers

Thanks and I hope this helps a little.

Regards

Gary

I live a ten minute drive from the airport and yesterday I went for a drive round the perimeter fence. The earth moving has all but finished and the actual building of terminal buildings are expected to start this week. The link road to Torreblanca has been started, it will be 13.7Km. long and is expected to take approx. 20 months to complete. The runway has been levelled and has yet to be surfaced. The local press say completion will be in the last quarter of 2008.

Hi Gary

Yes, there IS info, but it’s in Spanish – not unreasonable, I suppose! As for seeing any info on Aena’s site, I wouldn’t hold your breath, given that it is a privately-owned airport and so nothing to do with aena, at least on the airport ownership side of their organisation.

Can anyone let me know when Castellon Airport (Aeropuerto Castellon) is due to be operational? The Land at the airport site is indeed privately owned by a family based in Castellon with Villa Real lined up to sponsor it.

I just found this in a press release:

Work is expected to start again spoon on the new Costa de Azahar airport (Castellon), with some 50 million Euros already having been spent of various elements of the future infrastructure.

It now seems highly probable that it will be six months before the land has been completely formed for the airport and this will then be followed by the building of the facilities as well as the control tower, runways and a water purification plant.

The Infrastructure ministry in Madrid had halted the works on the premise that certain licences had not been obtained.

THEY HAVE ONLY FLATTENED THE LAND. MY SOLICTOR HAS SAID THEY ARE GOING TO RE START THE PROJECT. HOWEVER THIS AIRPORT IS TOTALLY POLICTICAL AT THE MOMENT.

HE SAID IT COULD BE FINISHED IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, BUT DONT HOLD YOUR BREATH.

Hi.
I drove past the airport a couple of weeks ago and the landscape has been dramatically changed since end of last year. The Work on the airport is speeding up and a new road is half way between it and Marina D'or. Which is why the airport is being built in the first place. I've heard several dates for the opening but the most popular one seems to be 2007. I don't suppose you need much for an airport, afterall just look at Valencia! Whoever said it's a political hot potatoe wasn't wrong. That whole area around Val d'alba is being taken over by ceramic factories and investment. The land is being cleared of the olive and almond trees and sold off to industry. How much this all has to do with the new airport I don't know but there's a certain politician in a certain town who's ears must be burning constantly. He's being blammed for the new financial interest in the area.
Even if the opening dates are later the airport is going to happen. Someone/s is investing billions of euros in the new Marina D'or resort and all that will be pointless without a new airport to bring in the tourists.
If I learn more I will post it.
Cheers G

Hi Anna

I think the Sunday Times are jumping the gun a little bit!

There is not much more information available about the airport than what has been posted here!

If you do find more info or you can post the url (webaddress) of the article that would be great.

I just went to the Mail On Sunday website but couldnt find the article

I live about 10 Km from the airport and yes work has started again, I drove past there last night and could see heavy machines lights moving around. Trouble is you cant see it from the main road so its difficult to see any detail from afar. As somebody previously mentioned it is privately owned, so nothing to do with aena. I too bought some land about 8 Km from the airport, so I think it will be good news. What is not good news is the Incinerator they proposed, to burn household waste near-by in Valdalba, which has now been halted due to public uproar, if that goes ahead, nobody is going to want to live near that. The rumour going around about both these projects is that they are financialy linked to F@bra (some shady political character from Valencia) the rumour is that his wifes sister, is the wife of the m@yor of Valdalba, and it was he who gave the incinerator project to go ahead. Can somebody tell me why they are building the airport on the side of a hill? there is loads of flat farm land near by (only 500 metres away), could it be by chance, the land on this hill was previousley owned by a certain family. Anyway, apart from all this milarky, I love living in Spain, warts and all.

Hi Gary
I received an email from a friend who lives near Val d'alba. He confirmed about the incinerator. Apparently the mayor has the hump big time. The airport doesn't seem to have progressed much. It's all dug out but there are still no buildings or tarmac or concrete. However his car GPS system is showing a roundabout on a airport service road that does not yet exisit. Those Spanish Politicians can even infiltrate the satelite system were doomed! I'm going over there in November to see if my future home is finished. I think it's being restored by the same builders who are (not) building the airport. Ready 2007 yeah right.
Best of G

Hi again
Just found somemore info on the Castellon Airport. It's owned by: 50% Generalitat Valencia and 50% Castellon Government. The original contract was in 10/2003 and the construction company had to finish it within 32 months. Obviously something has changed. I've also read that Albertis who own the motorway toll conssesion for the A7 nearby have a 5% stake and now Lubasa (whoever they are) have 50%. Clearly this does not add up unless the Generalitat and Castellon gov have sold off some 55%.

Me again! I know this isn't getting us a finish date but it's kind of explains why its taking so long.
There has been a jury to decide how much the owners of the land expropriated for the airport should be paid. It has been decided that some should get 4 euros per m2 as oposed to the orignal 2.4 euros per m2 This all depends on what your land was used for and how much you earned from it some will only get 1.6 euro per m2 (originally 0.7). Of course not everyone is happy with the ruling especially those that want 22.4 euro per m2! Wether that land belongs to an MP or his family-in-law we can only guess.

Just found out this information:

A Castellon court has placed a 'stop' order on part of the works for the new Castellón/ Costa de Azahar airport.

The order affects works that are being carried out on the Santa Barbara Mountain in Vilanova d'Alcolea, and are the result of a complaint lodged by an environmental lobby.

The decision came after it came to light that part of the works appeared to be being undertaken without the proper paperwork, and were affecting a cave known as the Avenc de Santa Barbara and its considerable population of bats.

I've had an apartment in alcossebre since 1987 love the area which will probably become overdeveloped with a new airport close by.I reckon the crew building wembley stadium should be called in to delay it further and they can then move on to the proposed olympic stadium in London

Hi Gary
When we were last in Spain we drove round the outskirts of the new airport in the Castellon area. There is a lot of work going on......large amounts of earth being moved.......and the runway is taking shape but there are no signs of any terminal buildings as yet. Local news is sparse. It will almost certainly not be ready this year. Maybe 2008!!!!! We are very interested as we have a holiday home in the area. We shall be back in Spain soon so will keep you posted. Thelma

Just found these postings through Google and it's given me a little more insight. I've bought an apartment at Marina d'or too and it's quite a trek from Reus, Barcelona or even Valencia airport - and not many of the trains stop at Oropesa. I'm flying over tomorrow for two weeks and hope to have another look. I'd heard about the eagles but not the bat-cave or any of the political stuff. I think we need Grupo Marina d'or to start lobbying on our behalf to get this thing built.

I had a look at the site June 2007 and the groundworks for the runway and so on are complete, but thats it. Its obviously been a mammoth task to level the land, but there is nothing started on buildings, tarmac and so on. There was no activity either so at a conservative estimate it looks like completion will never be before 2008/09.

Just got back from this area(oct 07).We drove all round the airport perimeter fence. Two large cranes now in place to commence building & car park area clearly outlined & levelled. Also signs up at J44 AP7 announcing new link road - C13 - to airport, this isn't started yet tho some work noticed nearer to airport site up the road from Torreblanca. So maybe it is happening! Angela
